Hi guys, what should be the average oil temp on the auto transmission? I never had a car that could measure this before and looking at the temp it got to 200 degrees (ambient temp was 65 degrees if it matters) and kept going up but the trip was over. I'm going on a long trip in few weeks and I wonder how high should it go before I start to freak out :help:

Engine oil should be around 212 degrees fully warmed up.

Trans oil should be a lot less.

Perfectly fine, these automatics are designed to run at those temps..

Checked mine yesterday and it stayed at 200 degrees also. I hope this is normal.

I called the service dept. and looked online but can't find what the normal operating temp is...

It will typically run between 190-210F during normal use. Track use, I am not sure.

The Ecoboost AT I rented was almost always at 201 degrees.

Is the factory fluid synthetic?
What is the recommended OCI?

After reading this thread, I looked under the car at the transmission.
I found that there are 2 aluminum tubes from right side to the left side of the trans. The interesting part is that they are inches from the catalytics!
Then I wrap both tubes with thermo wrap tape used on headers. This afternoon I drove about 25 min. outside 89-90F, used in S, and the highest was 185F- 189F.

A simple mod, that looks to reduce trans temps.....

Might be a good mod and might not be.

You want the transmission fluid to warm up as quickly as possible. That design might contribute to that (I don't know).

In a cold climate this might do more harm than good (or might not do anything at all).

Maybe you are right in real cold weather, but heat is a trans enemy. Here our average temp is 85-95F, so keeping everything at lower temps is benefitial. Also maybe Im getting the benefit of my modified grill, since the trans oil cooler is in the radiator. The highest I have seen is 189F so far....
