Ok my second question for the day.

My current BMW is "automatic" with sport + mode offering full clutchless manual (DCT 7 speed box) via the steering wheel paddles -I drive this mode 100% of the time. The car does not interfere with gear selections (unless it is about to blow up!).

I am only looking at the mustang convertible which only offers the auto box.

Interested in feedback on the Mustang gearbox software, and whether in "manual" mode you have 100% control (versus for instance the Mercedes programming which doesn't allow down shifts in certain circumstances etc).

Let me know your thoughts / experience.

From my experience yes you have 100% control when shifting manually in Sports mode, once you start manually shifting in Sports you have to continue manually shifting until you move the gear selector out of Sports. When downshifting the engine automatically revs up to match the gear being selected. I haven't tried to downshift at a stupidly unrealistic RPM yet but I imagine it would block the shift until circumstances allow it but so far I can't ever recall being denied a shift. Also if you forget to up shift you will sit there bouncing off the limiter until you manually shift. There is also a very slight change in aggressiveness of the shifts and rev matching from Sports, Sports+ and Track.

Only time the car will take over shifting is if you start manually shifting while in Drive and don't shift when it wants you too.

From my Experience the auto does have a full manual mode and is fun to drive, on the race track or being pushed hard it does overheat and put the car in limp home mode after 15-20 min (Fault with the design of the trans cooling system when used under hard conditions). Mine is going back and getting swapped over to Manual one.
