I searched the forum and didn't see this, and can't find it in the owner's manual.

How do I shift my Automatic transmission into neutral from park if the car isn't running? In every automatic I've ever had, you just turn the key "most of the way" over and then you can shift if you have the brake pedal depressed. Since there is a push button start, I'm not sure what to do.

In this car I can't seem to shift out of park if the car isn't running, which would be an issue if I ran out of gas or couldn't start the car and needed a tow, I would think.

Thanks in advance!

Cant you just push the start button without touching the brake and then press the brake and shift?

I'm pretty sure I tried that, but when I get home I'll try that and follow up.

I discovered it when I was parked in my driveway with the door open and didn't want to start it to move it, so I was just going to shift into neutral and stick my foot out to roll it back about two feet, and realized I couldn't shift into neutral without starting the car.

The other way is to pull up the shifter boot and hit the lock release switch. It's for when the car is out of battery.

Here is the procedure.

Press start button with foot off the brake.
Put foot on brake.
Shift to neutral.
Watch car roll away.

Haha thanks, I'll try it, sans the rolling away part!

read the manual or google or you tube
I started with the manual, and I could google but most of the links send me here anyway (which is how I found this place originally, searching for 2016 Mustang info), so I used the native Mustang6G search bar and didn't see anything addressing this specific question.

I suppose Youtube would have been next had no one been able to help, but I don't always like watching a ten minute rambling video for a solution that is probably 10 second long.

Have you tried any of the methods suggested in the posts above?

Not yet, Horse. I was going to yesterday but once inside never made it back out to the garage. It isn't a daily driver, so I haven't tried it yet. I have to drive it tomorrow to work so I'll try it tonight and see.

Just try it in the garage without starting the engine.

I tried this and it works. I hit the button without the brake depressed, and the green light blinks, then I pushed the brake and it shifted into neutral.

Thanks everyone. :hail:
