Just curious, but is there a cylinder head temperature above which we need to get worried? Or should we just use the oil temp as a guide?

You should be more concerned with coolant temps. Head temps can range from 199 to 225 degrees Farienhieght depending on the driving conditions. I'm pretty sure the temp discussion has been covered already, a search will yield some information.

It's probably going to depend on the engine.

Unless you're pushing the car really hard (like doing quarter miles at the drag strip or track racing), I doubt you're really going to do something where you need to be concerned about the cylinder head temp ;)

Maybe climbing a long, steep grade on a hot day (like, for example, the Grapevine in California), might be a good idea to know this as well.

Actually, that is exactly my concern. I drive down to LA frequently to see the kids, going over the grapevine, and I know how hot it gets there!

The coyote engine has proven to very reliable, stay on top of all your regular maintenance and you should have no issues. I added Royal Purple Purple Ice to the radiator, and it seems to do a good job of keeping all temps in check. Last summer I don't remember seeing over 217deg, even in hot FL weather and traffic. Hwy cruising I'm consistently at 200deg.

LOL, I swear I didn't know that in advance :lol:That's the one hill driving this great country that I've seen that tells you how well your car's cooling system is engineered

The torque in your V8 will definitely work in your favor going over the grapevine...I just remember one summer spending a roasty toasty day on the roadside of the grapevine (in 1988, on our family vacation) when my parents' 1987 Chrysler New Yorker (complete with 2.2 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine) overheated badly with our family of four and the A/C going....can I just say I don't miss the Chrysler K-cars one bit?
