I drove all last winter (about 4k miles) without sensors in my winter wheels and used all the driving modes including turning off traction control and advance track. The fact that the sensor light was on had no impact on any of the driving modes.
Interesting factoid; when I park behind my wife's car (Dodge) it will pick up the sensors in her car and the TPMS fault warning does not come on until I am a couple miles down the road. If I park next to her car it doesn't pick them up.
