I was on our club’s wine tour this last weekend and noticed a rattling sound coming from what seemed to be the front of the gear box area under the trans tunnel. It was most noticeable while creeping along at 20-30mph in traffic. It was noticeable enough for my girlfriend to comment on it. Its not the first time I’ve noticed it as a friend mentioned it while riding with me. Sometimes you can make it go away by putting the gearbox in neutral and letting the car coast…sometimes not. It’s a bit puzzling as I was trying to think is it gearbox (like input shaft bearing etc) , throw out bearing, or even noise from the trans cooler pump. I was waiting till I had some miles to see if that would mitigate the issue. So now with about 1350mi nothing has gotten any better…might be worse.

Since the cars are so new I was wondering if any of you have heard anything of this nature on any of the other cars? It definitely strikes me as something unusual as this wouldn’t be something I would call a normal sound at all. The cars ability to shift isn’t impacted although I would say the Tremec isn’t the smoothest shifting gear box I’ve ever experienced.

Appreciate any feedback anyone has on this.

Lucky you...so then I'm not hearing things....well I know I'm hearing things...just don't know what the source of it is...
Maybe it was just too much wine? ;)

My 350Z has a very loud throw-out bearing (basically a rumbling sound when the car is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released). Been that way for 194,000 miles with no issues.

My GT350 does not make that noise, but does make many others. The most noticeable is a rattling sound between 2000 and 3000 RPM when under light load. If I am under moderate load, that sound will manifest as a short rattling during shifting (as I am releasing the gas getting ready to shift, the rattle will appear). It that case it sounds like a transmission rattle, but it is the same sound the engine seems to make when under light load. I believe it is the sound Ford addressed here:

Yes, several people have commented on the "rattling" sound. If I leave my car running, elevate it on the lift, stand under the engine area, it seems to come from the area you describe. I strongly believe it is not an issue, just inherent to the design.

Another member posted a while back something similar (with videos), and it turned out to be a loose transmission line. Might want to check those.

I dont have a GT350 but I do have that noise. Dealership says its from a resonator, they are replacing it whenever it comes in.

Ok, so I discovered the source of a rattle I had I will share. I did not have the rattle when I first got the car but noticed after I had performed various mods (led lighting installed, resonator delete, etc). This rattle sounded like it was coming directly below me when I was driving. Almost like the heat shield where the resonators were was rattling up and down. Looking underneath everything was secure.

Turns out the rattle was back in the passenger rear quarter panel.

On both sides of the car's rear quarter panel if you put your hand up under the quarter panel high up past the muffler and then feel out from the quarter panel you will feel what seems like the side of the gas tank. Not sure what it is but I will call it the gas tank. On the side of the "gas tank" is a rectangle opening in which a rectangle plastic piece sits recessed in there. This plastic piece (maybe 5" wide by 2-3inches high) was not pushed in but just hanging there rattling between the side of the tank and the quarter panel. Pushed it in and problem fixed.

I had replace my rear sidemarkers with diode dynamics led ones. I must have accidentally hit it and pop'd it out of the recess during installation.

Yes! My car did a similar sound (like an empty coffee can swirling chain links inside) and it came from the exact same place! I had just picked it up new from the dealer the day before. The timing of it was perfect as I had my mechanic with me for a joy ride. We had just done a quick quarter mile run and when I dropped him off in front of the autoservice shop he owns It started rattling loudly from transmission area. Four mechanics all heard it and came running out of the shop shouting "
"sounds like the clutch idler".It was doing it in neutral. When i would push in the clutch it would go silent.Let out the clutch it would come back. I put it in first then back to neutral and it has disappeared ever since.I took it to the dealer right away but they had no explanation and there were no warning lights or error codes for it so nothing they could do.
