Maybe it's a poorly written article, but how does a transmission just fall off a car? If the article is accurate, questionable these days, this person is looking at negligent homicide charges and can't say I disagree. It's one thing to forget to tighten your lugs and wheel fly off. There had to be multiple mistakes for a transmission to fall off. Or it was just a rust bucket falling apart and not road worthy.

Don't know how but it happens. My father was notoriously cheap about cars in the '50s and '60s. He bought cheap POSs and often sold quickly when discovering them even worse than he thought. I recall a man demanding his money back after buying an AMC wagon and the transmission fell out the same day. On another occasion a bank robber was caught because he commandeered my father's Falcon wagon that broke down a few blocks from the bank.
