I decided to pull the trigger on changing over all my fluids to Amsoil yesterday. I was already running their XL 5W-20 in my car (the factory oil was either changed or the oil life meter was reset - by carmax - I'm NOT real confident they changed the oil I think they just reset it) since I swapped over my oil pump gears and crank sprocket and bolted on my Whipple.
I was going to just drop the pan and swap ATF but honestly - the right way is to have Ford flush it out so it gets all 12 quarts out from the converter and the cooler and lines - so I went to Bill Utter Ford yesterday with cases of Amsoil to get it done. They've been awesome to work with both times I've been there by the way.
So we got it on the rack and swapped out 12 quarts of motorcraft Mercon LV to 12 quarts of Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATL). I know you can't judge much they say by the appearance of trans fluid on it's own, but at 9k miles you could tell it contained organics and had seen some work during the transmission's early miles and break in. Nothing about the fluid's appearance or odor caused me any concern. Boy does that fresh fluid going in look nice though.
Then I had them drain the rear differential since it was on the rack anyhow and swap over to Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 with 4 ounces of Amsoil Slip Lock additive for the LSD. Since I had 2 full quarts I had him leave the plug out and flush a few ounces through to get any old fluid out and any debris or junk out of the rear. When it ran clear, we closed it up and topped it off and brought it back down off the lift.
I drove it home and didn't notice any noises or gear whine - NVH was about the same. Normally I'd say any differences would just be in my head but it definitely does shift smoother. The real test will be today when the fluid is cold.
I'm headed out to the garage in a few minutes to drop the trans pan and swap out the trans filter just because and put the clean new Amsoil ATF back in when I'm done - just so there's no doubt that it's factory fresh inside the filter without organic gunk up. Then I'm going to swap over to 0W-30 Signature series Amsoil motor oil with their EA 017 filter.
I doubt I'll ever run their 25k miles extended interval but it might get me down to 1 oil change a year at 10-15k. I'm just wanting the extra protection for the extra power.
Then it's off to the dyno for my first baseline runs and some custom tuning by HPP to see what's hiding in this car performance wise compared to the stock Whipple calibration. Too bad my headers are still on backorder because that's about all I have left to do other than suspension tweaks.
I'll try to post later today on the dyno session!
