Am I screwed?

When I replaced my nine month old OEM Pirellis with Michelin all seasons the service rep told me that there was a screw in one of them but it should patchable if I should decide to put them back on. I figured that I would keep them for a while and sell them if I'm happy with the Michelins. So far that's a yes.

When I got them home and looked at the damaged tire I noticed that there's a crack in the tread grove next to the screw running entirely around the circumference of the tire.

Based on the flashing on some of the treadwear bars it looks like this is where there is a mold seam. So it looks like this tire is splitting along that seam.

Do you think this is a manufacturing defect or will they be able to claim that the screw caused it? It's definitely a crack and not a slit.

I'm not really sure if I'll ever put them back on. I was thinking to either sell them or just hang onto them as something to put back on if the Michelins wear out around the time I'm ready for something new.

No. None of the other tires have a crack in the groove like this.

Take it in for a repair and see what they say. They should have some opinion based on safety...
