Yes, protection mechanisms will back it down if you went from 93 to 87 but it isn't the same the other way around. Table re-learning for advance is much slower for the same protection reasons.It does take a little while driving for the car to re-learn, but the effect in the seat of the car is big and even the sound of running 87 then 93 is different quite quickly. It isn't a re-tune. the car's sensors will detect different levels and adjust farely quickly. I would say for safety, if the car is running optimally on 93 then you go throw 87 in it and take it to a track the ecu would retard ignition pretty quickly to avoid damage.

You have to give the car a while of driving on the 93 so the ECU can re-learn, adapt the tables for the higher octane... :headbonk:
