I'm about to put down the grand to start a build. still not sure on color yet. I told the dealer that I don't want them to start the order for a bit. hoping that it will take them about 8-10 months to deliver. should this be an issue? also, when you place the allocation order, do you have to prequalify financially first? or can you wait to do that when car is delivered?

From my experience depending on dealer allocation, if you put down a deposit, they will order it and not sit on it.

They made me pre-qualify for the order to ensure there would be no issues with Financing. If you are paying cash, different story.

The way my GT350R order went for me is that you specify what options you want, they place the order, and they take your deposit. I did not have to pre-qualify because they just ran my credit last December when I bought my track pack GT350 (they know I'm good for it and they can always find another buyer easily. When the car is ready, they call you up and you go in and pay for it and take delivery.

There is no VIN yet, so there is no contract. Others have reported that dealers have backed out of the deal, but that is not the norm by any stretch.

When your car gets built depends on the type of allocation and what quarter it is scheduled to build.

Personally, I wouldn't wait. Get the order in asap. It wont get built right away most likely and you will still have time to change your mind as to options and colors. Once the order is pulled and a VIN is assigned, that's about it in terms of making changes.

You don’t want to know
As screwy as the order system has been for more than a year, I wouldn't take the chance on waiting and not getting a car. If you want the car, get it ordered now - you have no idea how long it will take to get built anyway. Plus, what if Ford decides to make 2017 a short model year, which has been rumored? (AFAIK, that rumor is without basis in fact.)

^^ This.

Don't wait. It will take 6-8 months to get it anyway. I put 10K deposit to order my R.

Agreed.

No credit check needed to place the order.

Not sure is this is the right thread for this, but I have been talking with two dealers to see where I should order the car from. In both cases ADM is not much, I bet I could get one to about MSRP. For that I would get their second 2017 allocation - the sales person said they would get at least two and the first one is already taken.

The other dealer is a bit odd, but I think they are being more open and honest that many. They way they work is that when they are certain they get an allocation they will call the people that have expressed interest the first person that is able to complete a deal (complete the order spec, sign the P&S, agreed trade value, deposit and confirmation of ability to pay the balance) gets the car. They also said that the allocation may not be made available if for business reasons they want to use it differently, for example to a loyal customer that wants the car.

This all sounds very iffy to me but at least I think they were being honest. If I really want the car, I guess I have to go to the dealer 45 minutes away and try to strike a deal and buy the second allocation and hope they are honorable.

45 minutes away is nothing, many have gone cross country and/or shipped the car (Mine went from IL>CA)

I suppose you are right. I should just go, make my deal and hope they honor the deposit when they get their second slot.

Just because they supposedly have two allocations doesn't mean they'll take it and if the run is shortened or something unforeseen happens as we have seen they may well not get it. Even if they take it they could sell it to another dealer. If you have a first allocation I think you are in a better position. Otherwise don't bank on it and keep your looking if you really want one just to cover all bets. Even if you put down a deposit is no guarantee.

The dealership I ordered from didn't require me to prequalify but I told them I was paying cash ($3k non-refundable deposit). I too am hoping it takes at least 4-5 months to be delivered. I believe you can change the specs of your order as long as it hasn't been scheduled for production, but don't quote me on that. Someone else might be able to chime in.:)
