I bought my 15 gt in june of last year, and since then I have been using 93 octane in it 100% of the time. My last car required this, so the extra cost was not much, and I don't drive very many miles. The car still has not reached 6000 miles, and that includes a trip from NYC to boston and back which I have never done before. But I am moving to a new place, and I will be seeing my miles to and from work double. So I was wondering, would there be any adverse effects to switching to 87 now? Or would it just be the less power?

There will be many heated opinions to come, but I cannot tell any difference in performance in mine so I run 87 all the time. No mechanical problems at 8.5k miles

Well, I know the car can be run on 87, 89, and 93. And you get different horse power figures, I am just wondering if the sudden switch will mess anything up, like if it has to re-calibrate or anything.

No. And that power difference is borderline negligible, at least to a performance car noob like myself.

I think you will be fine. Ive run some different octanes myself and same here, no significant difference.

I figured as much, I just was unsure. I'll be saving about 40-50 dollars a month now by switching, and that seems like enough of a savings for me now. Before hand it was about 15-20.

Sorry for the temporary hi-jack Raoh but what about 10-15 years of running nothing but 87....will it wear anything down or screw anything up over the years...solely from the reduced octane?

Thanks

I honestly have no idea. But I think the octane rating mainly just tells you about it's chances to cause knock. But in modern cars with knock sensors, I doubt it's a problem. Even more so because the car is designed for 87. My last car was an audi A4, and it said to never use below 91 octane. So it would ruin that.

Why drop all the way to 87 though? I mean there is 89 and 91 as well lol

I know your miles are doubling, but that's a huge drop.

There's no 91 anywhere near me! I would have been using that for my audi for years haha. And I could drop to 89. But even more savings dropping to 87. I'll see about how much of a difference I feel. Car is so fast already, that I pull away from anything I want to at a stoplight, easily lol.

I'm sure the car will run fine, the car manual says 87 is fine to run.

I always put premium for peace of mind driving lol I do have another car too that I use, in case I need to drive long and better mileage.

i only ran 87 until i knew i was going to tune then switched to 93.

it's such a small difference noone will notice it. apparently 1hp difference on the gt. anyways after switching to 93 before my tune, i noticed barely a slight smoother feel from the engine and maybe .3 better mpg.

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about power seats, windows, and other fancy electronics working 10-15 years from now. The manual says you can run 87, it'll be fine as long as you don't get a tune.

as far as power difference, I bet many people, if their GT made V6 level power, but still made V8 sounds, they wouldn't know the difference
