6R80 Woes

Been a long timer lurker, watching the forums since I placed the order for my DIB GT Auto back in January 2015.

Picked up my girl in January this year and have loved every second of ownership, that is until tonight.

Making my daily commute back to Birmingham from Wolverhampton and was about quarter of a mile from home.

All of a sudden pulling up to a set of lights, instead of coming to an idle nice and smoothly as normal, the car lurched and the engine began to bog down, almost to the point of stall. The best I can describe the sensation is similar to pulling to stop in a manual car but forgetting to disengage the clutch. I noticed gear changes had become much harsher after this point too.

I pulled over, put the car into park, switched everything off, and then started her back up. I was dismayed to find the issue wasn't a glitch. No warning lights appeared on the dash. I probably shouldn't have but I limped the last little bit back home.

Now on the drive at home, the car is stranded, I can't reverse out of my drive, the car stalls when placed either into drive or reverse.

Called Ford breakdown assist who sent an AA van out right away. He arrived with 20 mins. Gave the car a once over, but could not find any error codes. So she's being recovered back to the dealers tomorrow.

Car is completely stock and has only covered approx 6800 miles so far. There was no indication of an impending problem.

Absolutely gutted.

Had a quick search about but it seems generally the 6R80 is pretty solid, can't find too many issues with it.

First i've heard of it, have a feeling ford may require some of their very few specialists to come in and take a peek at it.

I'm more hoping for you it is something simple, like fluids required or such, however, with these, it's very rarely something that simple - but I can hope for you being a fellow brummie :(!

if they'll have your car in at Ford Birmingham for a while it'll meet mine as mines going back soon to get a few very minor issues dealt with (And underseal)!

Check the transmission section on this forum, you might need to do a lot of reading back but I found it very helpful when I thought I had problems.

Not really any help but doesn't sound serious (comparatively).

If it's running ok when in neutral/park and the issue is only apparent when engaging drive/reverse then it sounds like an electrical issue and the fact there's no error code probably means it's some random switch somewhere.

Annoying, but not terminal I wouldn't have thought.

Rather than a mechanical fault, I'd suspect a sensor of one sort or another...

Speed sensor sounds possible..... Most autos now days have an input and output speed sensors, and they "talk" to each other, if one has failed, the other won't get the message...

Either way it sucks, and I hope they sort it ASAP

Not much of an update but the dealer has had my car a week now.

They don't seem very forthcoming with much information.

All I know is it is indeed a gearbox issue and unfortunately it's not a quick fix. They've decided it's not something their own technicians are going to be able to sort. They are getting a specialist to aid them sometime next week. A bit sketchy but all I have to go on atm. :(

The wait continues I guess, I'll drop another update when I learn what the problem is.

send down a ford techie in about 6 weeks who will confirm yes its got a problem
then hear nothing for another two to three weeks and then be told by some young bird at ford hq " your are a priority and we are endevouring to fix your fault"
I sound skeptical but mark my word
fords stance on customer care "fuck you we've had your money"

Bit more news.

They still don't know exactly what is up with my particular gearbox but Ford have decided to write if off as a complete gearbox failure and have authorized and ordered a complete new gearbox for me.

They are hoping to obtain and install a new unit for me within a couple of weeks.

They'll then send my old gearbox off to be disassembled to try to determine exactly what is the problem. They are just as perplexed and curious as I am.

On the whole, some good news i guess, fingers crossed not too much longer of a wait.
