I am very interested in the knowledgeable responses available here. I have a 2017 GT Vert with 20s. Are 19s better overall? Not going to the track, but I know the advantages of lightweight wheels on my Miata, so figured the same applies here?
marginally sharper response on a tire with a shorter sidewall (usually 20” wheels will run a tire with a slightly shorter sidewall, but not always. Sometimes the tire used on the 20s are the same sidewall ratio as the ones on 19s). This impacts road feel slightly, and grip not very much, with the advantage to the shorter sidewall tire.
Less ability to absorb bumps with a shorter sidewall tire, but the the weight of the unsprung mass matters, as does the tire sidewall construction. This will be advantage to the larger sidewall tire (usually on the smaller wheel)
Generally speaking, a 20” wheel and tire package will put the bulk of the rotating mass a bit farther out, and therefore its a bit slower to accelerate or stop, but a high quality forged barrel lightweight 20” wheel can be lighter to spin up than a heavy cast 19” wheel, so it depends.
If you care about handling, pick the stickiest, highest quality tire you can afford and live with (summer only or all-season), then pick the widest wheel that will fit it, and pay close attention to the weight of the combined package. Often times that leaves people with a 19” wheel over a 20”, but there are some nice 20” packages out there too.
