Stupid. Demonstration of how bizarre and wrong our intellectual property laws are. This should be a Trade Mark not a patent. A patent should "do" something novel or non-obvious or solve a specific problem. Cosmetic differences between cars should not be patent-able, but these days corporations patent everything.

Not everything. I doubt GM is patenting the 2019 Camaro design.

Nah, not everything is patentable. This is a design patent, and completely legit. I have another type of patent for a chemical formulation. It is important to protect intellectual property, even if it just a novel automotive design.
Trademarks don't protect automotive designs. TM is used for a word, name, symbol, device, or any combination.

Taking a cue from Shelby trying to sue all the kit car manufacturers over "his" design that he never designed with the AC Cobra.

Nothing stupid about it.
Its a design patent. Not a utility patent. Completely different.

There can be overlap between a Design Patent and a trademark. A Design patent protects any new, original, and ornamental design for a useful article of manufacture. The requirements for Trade Dress protection are more stringent, and can be invalidated much more easily.

I suspect it's also to try and prevent certain Chinese companies producing a very similar car.

Very nice. By any chance, is there a similar document from the 2015 style too?

I always have to laugh when I see that “Land Wind” knockoff.
