+ Sync3 updates seem to be a positive, though I have not noticed any lately.

There haven't been any. It still sits at 1.0 which is really on the disappointing side since it's been over 6 months since shipping. I hope the promised updates materialize. I'm sure the CarPlay update will come, but will that be the only update for it? Hard to say at this point.

I don't like that the climate controls become dependent on the touch screen. Otherwise you'd have no idea what the air temp is. If one plans to keep the car long term even Sync 3 will become dated quickly. When you go to replace it you'd have to cross your fingers someone builds a aftermarket solution that retains climate functionality.

I will say that even though the base radio looks bad and doesn't have great sound, it does include all the modern features.

I use the voice activation to play music off my USB stick (occasionally) and to call my wife on my iphone, and it works extremely well. If you press and hold the voice button for a couple of seconds, you can even "interface" with Siri if you want to drive yourself crazy for some reason.

In the end I'm very happy with the base system, and prefer the buttons over the touch screen, even though the looks are disappointing.

After much debate, I ordered the car with the electronics package. I figured I might want Sync 3 and I did care about the looks. I also wanted the Homelink and turn signal mirrors as well as the toggle switches.
