Well - it does take less than a day for final assembly but many of the subassemblies take much longer (body/paint, engine, transmission, etc.). It just depends on what part of the car you define as the start of production. If you choose the engine or the transmission, it could have been many months ago.

I think you missed my point ! :frusty:

docprego was expecting to see Mustangs on or after 7/14 build date

So I picked on him :headbang:

I think you're talking about from the initial mining of the iron ore or aluminum used in the engine block and chassis and body panels until you get the keys in your hand.

:D Understood! It could be less than a couple of weeks though - just depends on if the off-site subassemblies are available, delivered, and prepped, and how long it takes to get the painted parts ready for final assembly.

Not quite that far back  The manual transmission does come from a German owned plant in China (Getrag) so there is a bit of lead time on it.

Does this mean we will see cars on the street shortly after the 7/14 job#1 date? I know the OKTB date is 9/9, but I am not sure I fully understand what that means.

Could someone please explain?

Thank you.
It means you might see cars arrive at dealers before 9/9 but they won't be able to sell them until that date. The first ones "on the street" will most likely be for automotive journalists to test.
SEE BELOW: "okay to buy"

I've gotta add a little to this thread about the "okay to buy" term. That is NOT the date that cars can be sold. Everyone seems to be interpreting it as the day that dealers can sell cars. Absolutely incorrect!!!

"Okay to buy" date is the date that Ford will start scheduling retail orders for regular 2015 Mustangs. Stock orders have been scheduling for several weeks already. Those cars will be available to sell immediately upon arriving at dealerships, even if they show up before 9/9.

From what I understand, the only retail orders being built before the "okay to buy" date are the LE 50th models, as they are all supposedly being built before the regular 2015's begin production.

Essentially, every new model year for every model of Ford, stock orders get scheduled first while retail orders have to wait in the queue until the "okay to buy" is achieved. This way, any early glitches will be limited to stock vehicles and not somebody's special order. The 9/9 okay to buy is just an estimate at this time as Ford won't actually nail down the exact date until production is running smoothly with stock orders first.

i ordered my 2015 GT on 6/13/14. i got my vin on 6/26 and can track in online on the ordering site. about a week later, i did a color change on it and it took. When i ordered it, they put it in as a special order x-plan. then they stated it may arrive sooner if they did it as a stock order, would still get everything i ordered and get the same price from them, just would not have my name on the window sticker, i said that was fine. I am still waiting for the window sticker and build date to show up for it.

Not sure if this was posted (don't have time to go through 20 pages at work) but saw this on Autoblog.

Mustang6g.com believes that it has unlocked start date for 2015 Ford Mustang production citing a Ford dealer communiqué. According to the report, job one on the 2015 hardtop will allegedly start in just a few days, on July 14, although units that are known as "OK to Buy" won't enter production until September 9. The cars built between those dates are most likely final pre-production cars for the executive test fleet, and will likely include the cars we'll be driving at the media launch.

Sun worshippers, meanwhile, would seem to have a longer wait. Job one on the droptop supposedly isn't slated to start until September 14, with production models starting on October 27. As is the case with the hardtop, these final pre-pros are for the execs and media to test, while actual dealer orders will come from vehicles made after the October date.

After speaking to Ford, though, we wouldn't put a great deal of stock in those dates as reported. We reached out to Said Deep, Ford's North American Product Communications Manager.

"There are multiple build schedules for any product that we build," Deep told Autoblog. "We don't recognize any of those dates."

While it's a virtual certainty that Ford is actively building pre-production Mustangs (your author spotted an uncovered, fully badged 2015 GT Convertible just yesterday), it doesn't seem like we're going to hear about the first consumer examples until they roll down the line at the Ford factory in Flat Rock, MI.

I did say, "Does this mean we will see cars on the street shortly after the 7/14 job#1 date?"

Shortly after does NOT imply 1 day.
