I just checked my order today on http://www.cotusb.ford.com/, still no VIN. I ordered from my dealer in Pembroke Pines FL on 6/2/14, they submitted my order on 7/11/14 for my yellow GT, but no VIN or update since 6/2/14 from my dealer other than a story of delays and a message to call him every week or so asking if my car received a VIN. I actually tried to place the order on 5/25/14, but my dealer said come back next week since they did not have a way to process the order yet.

I can save you some time and grief talking to your dealer. You will not get a VIN unless they start scheduling before the date Ford put out weeks ago. If that happens, it will be a hot topic here. VINs/sequence numbers are not chosen by a few folks in cubbies except for the rarest of circumstances. Scheduling will begin again on 11 September. It doesn't mean you will get a VIN that day, just when scheduling begins again. A lot of guys with retail orders should start to see VINs populate.

Congrats. Just one question, was your order placed as Stock or Retail?

Placed as dealer inventory as I was told by the GSM I would receive it quicker.

My instincts were confirmed. Those orders are showing up as being processed now are cars with priority (dealer stock). Those whos cars were placed as Retail will not see their cars built until after September.

there has been no confirmation that ANY retail orders have been scheduled at this point, only stock orders. So, of course, the only ones seeing progress at this point are stock orders.

Unless by some magic people here that have retail orders are just the unlucky ones, which is very very unlikely.

Question then:

If dealers knew/know stock orders would be built first why didn't more order them this way like they did mine? Yes, I have a great relationship with my dealer, but logically the sooner they get them in the sooner they are out the door, correct?

Simple. Lets say a dealer is in a town with average household income at 60k a year. its a small town dealer and they only have 2 allocations. Both are being used to order one Premium ecoboost and one base GT. As prior history, this is what will sell in that town.

I want a premium GT, PP, 401, etc. costing about 40k. If they use their dealer stock allocations on you, then there will be no mustangs on the lot to sell for customers who can only afford the ecoboost prem. or base GT. so they put yours in retail. A guaranteed sale.

Okay that makes sense for that very specific scenario. I suppose then most if not all orders should be placed through the largest dealership within a reasonable driving distance to improve their chances of getting a car built through allocation. A deposit further guarantees the sale.

As has been stated before, the size of the dealer isn't always what it seems. It's more to do with throughput vs inventory size. They're not always synonymous.

To me, having a person on the inside that you know and trust means more than anything. I'm working with a smaller dealer, but someone I know and he's making the experience go very smoothly. Even if that means I may not get my order before someone else, it's worth it. Although, I think I'm also not doing too badly in that department either, since I still have a car scheduled at the end of Job 1.
