Did you notice the speed, tach, and other dashboard pieces? The speedo and tach are from the Fusion, which soon will be built in the same factory as the S550. There is some degree of commonality there, along with the Explorer center stack. This is a way to save money.

And the Fusion and S550 will be going down some parts of the same assembly line... as the current Mustang was doing with the Mazda6 until last year.

What I really want to see is for Ford to move the speedo and tach closer together, and use a smaller and more thickly padded steering wheel (instead of the bumper car design currently used). We're seeing the better Fusion design in the prototypes... but it's still not enough.

Yes the test mule was a sludge of Fusion and other parts. I thought the center stack was from the F150? Dont remember the Explorer stack looking like this. Different knob and button layout.

They are assembling some Fusion parts at the Flat Rock plant or is this a gradual move for the entire body to be build there? Do we know what parts are assembled together? Assuming this is for cost savings of course. If we know, should be able to figure out which pieces will be shared.

Certain levels of Fusion are assembled at FRAP, but I don't believe they will move all assembly from Hermosillo.

Don't get hung up on where the parts came from. The headlamp switch in spy shots is the new standard Ford fare, and I suspect much of the switchgear will be standardized as well.

Most Fusions are and will continue to be made in Mexico. Ford is going to start assembling the Fusion in Flat Rock as well so they can increase overall capacity. Right now the Mexico plant is working over capacity to get us as many Fusions that have been sold.

Ford is becoming better and more sophisticated with its supplier and production chain. The efficiency and cost savings will hopefully make its way down to the product level by seeing some of those savings being put back into the car.

In addition to a thicker padded wheel, think we need a more ergonomic one as well. As with much of the current interior its feeling outdated -- the center stack needs to get less clutter overall and rely more on touch controls. It's little things that will make a big difference.

Why do they have to standardize anything? Cant we have differentiation between lines anymore? It drives me nuts. I understand they want to save costs and streamline assembly but the cars these days are losing their identities completely due to cost saving.

Because the electronics and the wiring harness is one of the most expensive components of all, and the most complex. With variations galore for each engine, nav/non-nav, amp/standard radio, etc etc. And the series of crash and safety sensors is also very expensive and takes one heckuva lot of testing - with one heckuva big lawsuit and service cost if anything goes wrong. So the hidden parts underneath needs to be standardized when possible - for everybody's benefit.

All the diff components makes sense but the exterior is really starting to look all the same and there built off diff platform obviously and theres no cost savings in similar design that i can think of.

I'm still hoping for a classy interior touch like the one posted by someone else on here. The 45th camaro SS interior.. and they definitely kept it classy. Hope they keep the pony out of the inside.

Ford has been good about recognizing the anniversary's. Here is the dash plaque form my '89 LX 5.0, for the 25th anniversary.

Sorry for whomever has my '89 now, you are missing the dash plaque!

That's a huge dash plaque. The 40th one was much more minimal but they put it right by the cig lighter behind the shifter. Why hide it like that if your going to put it in at all....

Well, lets get back to Mustangs instead of lurkers.

Here's one thing that has to change: the skinny-ass steering wheel with bumper car styling and proportions:

Unfortunately, with the current gauge cluster, not much can be done because of the center LCD, or the center 4 gauges. They made that styling choice years ago in the concept and have been stuck with it ever since. And the mules look like they will have the same problem... but at least a better looking airbag is being used with the Fusion steering wheel. Hopefully they will have en entirely new wheel when the time comes. Personally, I'd prefer no center LCD screen at all, but a big screen off to the right and angled to the driver. But I do want real gauges, with calibration (for a change).
The center LCD is currently fairly useless, and the oil temp is the usual practice of "ok" or "not ok" - no numbers. The center LCD is pretty much useless as instrumentation.

I highly doubt we get a whole new wheel. Seems like they will just use the same heated steering wheel of the new Fusion. I agree the wheel is way too skinny if you have normal to big hands. You can swap it for the GT500 wheel or get a wheel cover, but the stock GT one should really be improved.

GT500 wheel is exactly the same, except for covering. It uses a combo of Alcantara and leather, instead of just straight Alcantara. I've seen my students struggle even more with that wheel, since the leather gets slick.

In fact, I'm wondering if I can put a Fusion wheel on my current Mustang... I'd have it recovered somewhere if I knew it would fit and maintain all the electrical connections and functionality.
