So I just picked up my 2017 and I noticed the cats being so close to the cylinder heads on these cars. Has anyone had any issues with the cats breaking up and injecting inside of the engine? If you dont know the NIssan Sentra Se-R Spec V, Altimas, Toyota MR2 Syders, all have a cat thats very close to the head of the motor. And after 50k miles they essentially break down and inject back into the motor. Does anyone here have a higher mileage S550 and can comment if youve had any problems? Thanks

Most of that had to do with internal EGR being used by retarding the intake cam via the variable valve timing. Not sure if the Coyote implements this or not, likely does for emissions. Mind you that was 15 years ago as well, the quality of the catalytic converter has come a long way in that time span. Most cars locate the CC close to the cylinder head due to speeding up how long it takes to light off. This stuff is crucial to passing emissions with today's standards.

I can tell you that the cats like to fail with the Roush tune. I've had three cars come thru the dealership I worked out that were Roush Stage 1 supercharged and the cats failed to the point it popped the motor. May be a tuning issue that caused the cats to fail and clog originally, but still something I'm concerned about with these cars.

EPA requires 120k mile cat warranty now (maybe 150k, depends on how it's certified). If Ford screwed this up they would be out a LOT of money. This corresponds with the new Federal Tier III emission standards phasing in starting with 2017 model year.

stock tunes do not fail cats, because if they do fail within the warranty period, the EPA requires a recall and will fine the hell out of the OEM. clearly there have been problems in the past, but if you keep your car stock or use ford performance parts you should be fine for many years.
