I thought those radios where in the HAM radio frequencies. Do they not require a license?

I looked them up and it looks like you are correct. Apparently they come programmed as an FRS/GMRS radio and you can get software from the manufacturer to reprogram them for the other frequencies that require licenses. You would be able to use the FRS channels at up to 1/2 watt with no license required, or get GMRS licenses and use those channels at about 3 watts with them.

Really nice find for just over $18 dollars each for OP's intended purpose. I may have to look at them for the ski trips if they work out well for your trip.

Really nice find for just over $18 dollars each for OP's intended purpose. I may have to look at them for the ski trips if they work out well for your trip.
I'll keep you updated on how they work out for us on the cruise.
