All is well now, but 2 accidents by others has led to 2 replacement CF wheels.
The first was the passenger rear wheel. My dealer let me know when my car originally arrived, so I rushed over only to find that the transport driver gouged both the wheel and tire when backing the car off the trailer. The tire had a bad cut and fibers were exposed on the wheel. Thankfully, Krause Ford stepped up and had replacements overnighted and I was able to take receipt of the car a day later.
About a year and a half later and around 3k miles on the car, the second event occurred. I had been waitlisted for a track day at Road Atlanta in March but was told the list was too long and I would not get in. The day before the event, to my surprise, I received an email letting me know I was in. This was good news but I had put off having the SC2s put on that had been sitting in the basement since being purchased on sale from Tire Rack the previous winter. I don’t know about you guys, but I had a hard time determining when the tread was getting too low to be safe for a track day.
I called Krause right away and they said they could get me in, but as it turns out I couldn’t get away from work for several hours. By the time I arrived at my Ford dealer, they no longer could mount and balance my tires. In a panic I called a number of tire stores and found a Kaufman Tire dealer with a Hunter Revolution changer system that could do the work that evening.
Kaufman managed to get 3 of the tires mounted but I noticed the crew had huddled together and had looked over at me thru the glass window a couple of times with strange looks on their faces. As it turns out, the thick red plastic piece on the end of the machines top arm/bar broke exposing the metal while turning to mount the last tire. The now metal arm gouged, scraped and marred one of my front wheels. It was painful to see for sure.
Here again, the responsible party thankfully stepped up with no fuss and ordered a replacement. They were shocked at the cost but followed through. They also said at the time of the order there were only 2 front wheels to be had in the US. With shipping it cost them just a hair over $3k. I received the wheel yesterday and as expected they did not want to mount it.
I had no problem with that as they didn’t want to take on the liability again. I will go back to Krause Ford knowing they too have the touchless machine and successfully changed the first damaged wheel.
On the bright side, I now have a spare albeit a damaged wheel (front). I did not get to keep the first one. From my understanding, the first replacement about 1.5 years ago required the original to be exchanged, whereas that was not required on this second one.
While it’s a little scary dealing with these CF wheels, I love this car!
