Well, guys and gals, it's finally done. We finished up Josh Parker's car, Scarlet, last night and he has the first running and driving 2.0 FoST (closed deck) based 2.3 in a Mustang. We finished up in enough time to get the first 50 miles on it and do the first oil change too. She seems to be strong and healthy, especially for a fresh engine (unseated rings). I'll try to get some pics and videos uploaded soon.

I saw this in the Florida S550 Facebook group, but wanted to find out what makes this a hybrid. Are you running something similar to the old SVT Contour, where they'd swap the heads from the SVT Contour's 2.5L onto the 3.0L block from the Taurus/Escape? 2.0 heads on a 2.3L block?

Adam has had a block sitting in the car with the motor mount and stuff fabbed up, but the last I saw it, it wasn't assembled or running/driving (Adam stays super busy and probably hasn't had much time to mess with it). This car is finished and we were out playing in it last night.

On this setup, we used the closed deck FoST block and placed the 2.3 rotating assembly in it. It requires a good few modifications to work properly. The oil drain passages, coolant passages, etc need to be changed or modified to mate up with the 2.3 parts.

So I assume that the rotating assembly from the 2.3L is stronger than the 2.0L? I mean, what's the draw to losing displacement but increasing combustion chamber volume (by way of the larger heads)? Lower compression for higher boost?

Probably the other way around...the 2.0 block is closed deck (i.e. no free floating cylinder liners ;)

IIRC, the 2.0 has the same bore as the 2.3, just less stroke (Ford has chosen to use stroke, rather than bore, to get more displacement, which seems odd in an ECOboost engine since more stroke=more internal friction=more pumping losses). I wonder how things would be if you turned a 2.0 into a 2.3 by increasing the bore...

Both the 2.0 and 2.3 share a common bore size, 87.5 mm. In order to turn a 2.0 into a 2.3 by boring it, you'd have to resleeve it with something like the Darton sleeves. On the factory liners, Ford uses PTWA to create the cylinder liners and they can't be overbored. Well, there's debate to whether they can be slightly overbored, i.e. to 0.020, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. It is worth nothing that the cylinders can be puff honed and use 87.6 mm pistons to have tighter PTW clearances, if desired.

Sounds like a really impressive build can you give us some more information on it?

Power goals? Turbo size? Fueling solution, ect.

Also what made you keep the head and not switch to the 2.0L with separate exhaust manifold?

But for a small displacement engine that doesn't rev particularly high you're interested in torque, which means more stroke rather than bore.

When I first saw this thread I thought this was a 2.3 EBM with a 2.0 head aka to get a 4 port exhaust head.

Car is running great, even at only partial throttle and during break-in!

We're currently only running stock turbo, stock downpipe, and 93 octane for the break-in sessions. We'll be going back to full E85 in the future, along with a custom turbo kit from EcoFab that will include a 60mm PTE BB turbo (details yet to be decided), and a small shot of nitrous.

I can't thank Juben enough for all his help, knowledge, expertise, patience, flexibility, and willingness to make this happen! Him, Jessie, Kevin, Rob, ZSorr, Sanders, all awesome effort from them to assist me in achieving this goal!
