okay so I’m about to install my stage 1 whipple kit on my 15 mustang gt pp. obviously the normal oil we use is 5w20.
I’ve read thru the install instructions multiple times and even done a search function on the digital version and they don’t mention anything about switching.
So I called whipple and spoke to Cody who was the s550 guy apparently. He said they recommend 5w50 which is a pretty big difference.
Can anyone advise? Thanks

Hmm. When I spoke to Whipple, they recommended 5w30. So did the shop that recently did an R&R on my Whipple SC head. So that is what currently is my car.

They recommend 5w-50 for the '18s, but not sure on the 15-17.

One of the best oils out there is the Amsoil Signature Series 5-30 for our Whipple setups.

Wow ok so 5w-30 then. Do you still run the ford Motorsport filter or if doesn’t matter?

I just did another recent Whipple install on a friends 17 Mustang and noticed in the updated directions that 5w-50 is now the recommended oil. I have been running 5w-30 though for the longest time on my car. I don’t have a plan to change but I’m not against it either.

Don't know about our cars.....but on my cars I ran 5W30 Penzoil full syn on the 05 GT with cams/LT's/and a 2300 TVS running 9psi, ran Amsoil 5w20 in the 14 GT, and Motorcraft full syn 5w20 on the 13 GT both running 10-11psi on a 2300 TVS. Plenty of passes and spirited driving. I buy them to drive them not put them under glass and idle them to a car show on a sunny Sunday. The current 17 is also on 5W20 full syn Motorcraft on 11-12psi with a 2300 TVS on board and will go on 5W30 Amsoil Sig this spring just as a precautionary.

The larger displacement PD Whipple head unit you have (2.9L vs traditional 2.3L's) will be more efficient because of the larger volume it can produce at a given boost level when compared to the traditional 2300 TVS units all rotor tech improvements aside. The improved rotors in recent years from Eaton help efficiency even more. The result? Cooler IAT's which equates to more efficiency and less heat in the combustion process. It's simple physics with regard to the displacement process that creates boost. "...but I uh, never studied law." ~ Bugs Bunny

Best of luck and hopefully you drive it like it was meant to be,

Huh... I guess I make the leap to 50 if that’s what they’re recommending now

Generally 5w-50 doesn’t seem that commen, can’t get it at most auto stores or anything.

I run Amsoil's 0w40 signature series in my whipple stage 2 I was not comfortable running 5w50 in a daily driver especially when I was coming from 5w20 motorcraft. I found a good article on the subject on SVTPerformance. The 0w40 was designed for the hellcat and Nissan GT-R. I've been running it for 3k miles so far and no issues. It runs about 10 psi higher at warm idle I'm also using Amsoil's ea oil filter
