Considering mounting a power inverter in the trunk, but I'd prefer it be hardwired instead of running a plug to the 12v socket.
Anyone ever done this? I only want it active when the car is on, and would probably have to cut off the "cigar lighter" end of the power cord in order to hardwire it. That in itself could be an issue.
Anyways, just brainstorming. Any ideas?

I did something like this before and decided not to clip off the plug. At the time Radio Shack was still in business, I bought a female lighter plug socket which I then wired into the car then the power converter or any other accessories could be plugged in to it. I’m confident you can find a plug like this online.

You want to mount the inverter close to where you need it and not run cords all over. I put a inverter inside the center console hidden in the interior and put the plug where the 12v socket was because I don’t use it and there’s another one in the console storage compartment. You can do it the opposite if you want. I use this plug. To get the full power of a inverter you have to wire it straight to the battery and not to a power point. It’s easy run straight to the battery with a relay and you are good.

Don't use a cigarette lighter socket, unless you just really want to use other accessories like that in the trunk. Plenty of car guy hobbies have people running 12v power to the trunk from the battery, and you are basically doing the same, like if you are installing a large sub and amp back there

Get thick wire meant for auto use, good brands preferred. Get an inline fuse holder and fuse meant for your size of wire. Fuse goes on the wire side closest to the battery. Get a relay also, so the wire only has power with the car on.

Just run the wire to the trunk and directly connect the inverter to the wire. Don't bother with a cigarette lighter contraption, unless have other weird reasons to need one in your trunk. I'd add a toggle switch in the trunk as an extra precaution to make sure the inverter only gets power with it switched on.

Lots of other uses to have a thick gauge 12v power line running through the car to the trunk. Tee that wire and beef up your FPDM 12v wire for improved throttle response while you are doing everything.
