For the first time ever, Ford will sell the Mustang in China, where it's actually seen as an exotic car
Exactly 50 years ago, one of the most iconic and influential cars of all time launched to much enthusiasm at the 1964 World’s Fair. That car is the Mustang and to commemorate this historic event, a 50th anniversary celebration was held in Beijing.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally and other Ford executives were on hand to mingle with the crowd and express their enthusiasm for the new Mustang. They were also stating that for the first time ever, the Mustang will be available in China by 2015.
The red carpet leading to the venue featured a 1976 Mustang Cobra II. When was the last time one of those was on a red carpet? Other attractions at the event included a bank of Need for Speed video game setups so people could “drive” the new Mustang and a very real 5.0 Mustang strapped to a dynamometer that visitors could ride in as it did a run through the gears. The V8 music did wonders to drown out the questionable music at the venue.
The Mustang will not be without competition in China as the Camaro is available but sells in small numbers. Nonetheless, there is a very active Mustang owners club in China and the Mustang is perceived as an exotic.
