Today i was looking at my GT's hood's structure and I've seen that even if the upper part is made of alu, there is an under side which seems to be made of heavy steal and that seems to be the very cause of its huge weight.

what if I stripped that steal structure down? Did any of you guys did that mod to loose a good few lbs?

I'm tempted to...

thanks.

So loosing a couple of pounds risking the possibility of hood flop open at high speed?

I did this to the hood and decklid on my 2000 Mustang. I was left with only the top skin. I would definitely put hood pins on it if you decide to do this.

is the hood blanket necessary? I had it off when I installed the roush vents, but put it back on. Seems like that and the manifold cover could be scrapped pretty easily, unless they serve the purpose of insulation that must be kept in place on even a street-only car...?

It's too keep the hood cool so the paint does not discolor under high temperature.

Incorrect. It's supposed to suppress an engine fire.
Incorrect it's sound insulation.

Look at a pic of one of the burned 15 Mustangs, there is nothing left of the hood liner.

Suppress as in slow down, not extinguish.

So why don't aftermarket hoods have them? Even some models don't from the factory.

Why is the GT350s so much smaller? There is not enough coverage there to slow anything.

Same argument could be said against it being a sound reducer.
