hmm I think I noticed this on my wife's '13 fusion. I think one may be when the door is still open vs. closed? I've yet to test this though.

May be something with seatbelts on or off when you open the door or having both doors open

I though my ears were failing. I haven't noticed this on the door open, but when the reverse sensor or collision avoidance warning sounds comes on it randomly switches between two tone styles. It also switches between the front speakers and rear speakers. Anyone else notice this?

The second tone style sounds more like a rapid series of harsh beeps rather than the "softer" tones. I wonder if Ford designed it this way so one doen't get used to the tone and tend to ignore it.

Are you saying that having my headlights on or off affects the type tone used by my collision avoidance and backup sensor? Not in my case. I can start the cart out in the sun, the headlights are not on and the tone style can change to the rapid "beep". I can start the cat in the garage, the headlights come on and the reverse sensor beep is the softer/slower tone. The state of my headlights makes no difference in my case. The tone style used when the car starts remains at least for a days worth of key cycles.

I've actually heard this sound before as well now that I think about it. Thought I only noticed it when pulling up/reversing a little without my seat belt on. Not 100% sure though. Sub'd.

There was a thread on this before. Last I recall no one has been able to figure out why the car randomly decides to change chimes. The first one is the modern ford chime that all the current fords use, the second one is the chime older or "last generation" fords use. The second chime is what can be heard in the S197 and the last generation F-150. The new F-150s use the new chime.

I started the original thread about this: http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35531

I've experiemented with this a lot. A 50% sure-fire way to replicate this is to turn off your car and not open any door or press any button or do anything. Sit there for about 30 minutes and start the car up again. 50% of the time the chimes come from the instrument cluster not from the speakers so they sound harsh and like they are coming from the front, not from all around you.

About 10% of the time you do this, even the reverse parking beeps will come from the front. A VERY VERY select few number of times, it'll just happen randomly and correct itself at the next restart.

I was thinking it may have to do with whether it senses the key or not? Thoughts?

The chimes communicate over the network and are played via the audio system (when powered) unless there is a an issue (comms, hardware failure, etc) and then the chimes default to the IPC. If you are continually having this issue I would say the system is sensing a failure somewhere."
