Hey guys hope you enjoyed the holidays. I am kind of new here but been reading on these forums for about a year.

So I am ready to pull the trigger on this used 2015 Mustang GT Premium in CO 6sp Manual. The dealerships asking price is $29,900 and this is my first time buying a car out of state. I will be going there tomorrow and I want to pay somewhere in 27k-28k OTD not including sales tax since I will be doing that when I get back home. I did call the dealership before new years eve and talked with the salesman and told him that I am kind of on tight budget but I think that we could make a deal, he said I guarantee that if you come down to the dealership I will have you drive back home in that car.<< I was surprised he actually said that.

So heres my question what should be my starting offer to the point that they know I am serious and also I don't want to offer a lowball offer would 26k be a good start? or should I go a bit higher or lower? and after that how much should I offer? I really need your guys help.

P.S any other advice would be greatly appreciated related to negotiation.

Are you paying cash or financing? Negotiating is a waste of time. Be real with yourself on what you really want to pay for the car. Look over the car and drive it. Make sure you still feel it's worth the number you want to pay. If it is tell him, I like the car, but I want to pay xx,xxx OTD. Tell him no more than that. You're not trying to waste his time or yours with the back and forth. If he comes back with a higher number then what you said, shake his hand and walk out... He'll come after you I promise. As long as your number is realistic.

You pay tax there. You just pay the state tax for where you reside.

I won't advise what someone should offer or pay, that's their decision.

As far as researching the purchase, do you have a copy of the window sticker? Window stickers are the easiest, non-subjective, way to compare cars and equipment. Search the web for only comparably equipped used vehicles with similar mileage in the dealer's region and you'll begin to get an idea what prices their market is bearing.

If demand is steady in that region you'll find fairly consistent prices from dealer to dealer and typically less negotiation room. If demand is low you may see inconsistent advertised prices as they fight to find a buyer and there is likely more negotiation room.

If you find comparable vehicles for less, print those out and take them with you to dealer for leverage. Let the salesman know these are your next stops if he's unable to work a deal.

That's not true, I've purchased several cars out-of-state & I have always paid the sales tax & registration fees (for my state) when I went to the DMV to register the car & transfer/purchase a plate.

Do your research on what similar 'stangs are selling for in that area. Most certainly get a CarFax etc. to make sure it's not been in a accident which would affect the value (possibly significantly). Decide based on your research what a fair offer is for the car. Go drive it & if you are happy, write out a check for the amount you are willing to pay. They can take it or leave it. You need to be prepared to a) walk if they try to up the price or b) drive off the lot right then with your new prize.

Remember - this is a MASS PRODUCED commodity, Ford made over 100K of them last year. There's always another one out there (perhaps an even better one) that someone needs to move out of their garage or off their lot ! Don't get sucked into the "gotta have this one" mindset, dealers can smell a sucker & will make you pay !

From a dealer, you're talking about? What you are referring to sounds as if you're talking about buying it privately. The dealer should handle the taxes, title and registration for you. I bought mine out of state and they did everything for me and I paid my states sales tax.

Yep, from the dealer. When I buy out of state all I want from them is the car, a temp/transport tag (paper) & the title transfer paperwork. If the car is being transported via truck, don't even need the temp tag. No BS fees for them doing the transfer, registration etc. Most dealers would rather not fiddle with state taxes for other states, tho if they are near a state border they sometimes are set-up for the adjoining state.

Thanks guys for all the great advice. And I will be paying cash and I have researched similar cars and I think anywhere between 27k-28k is what its worth.
For the sales tax and DMV process I just prefer to do it on my own because I moved to a new home and I need to change my address.

Makes sense, I'm in VA and bought in NC...

Thanks everyone for the advice. I bought it 28,250 OTD excluding tax and registration fees. I'll post a couple pics in the next response.
