I had my car dropped out of a reputable shop local to me for full paint correction. After bringing the car home my first night I realized in horror the next morning how many scratches and swirls were on the car. Barely 3 miles when I bought it. Anyway, the shop did a great job and I will have more photos to share on Sunday. I have yet to pick up the car but I will have her back tomorrow! For now here's a few teasers.

Never let the dealer wash the car - ever.

Looks great. I'm a huge fan of paint coatings and they did a great job on yours.

Yeah I definitely learned my lesson. To be fair, I took a look at the car before they cleaned it up and it was already covered in swirls, i'm guessing they had them right off the assembly line or at port before they were delivered. Who knows at this point.

kkakonn - did you get the dealership to pay for the cost of the paint correction?

I'm in a similar situation. Bought a black GT about 2 months ago. It was sitting on the dealer's lot outside and was pretty dirty and had lots of water spots on the paint also. I told them to please don't wash it, I will do it myself at home. Well, after I washed it at home I found tons of scratches, some pretty long and deep. My best guess is that my car had been washed a couple of times by the dealership's "lot guy" with a dirty wash mitt since it had a few miles on it when I purchased it. My guess is that it got dirty during test drives in the rain and therefore was probably washed 2 or 3 times before I purchased it.

I just decided to take on the job of buffing this beast out myself ... by hand -yeah . I'm not in a big hurry and I wanted to ensure no paint or trim pieces go burned up by a power buffer.

So I'm using 4 Meguiar's products that have worked superbly, even by hand: Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish, Scratch-X and NXT wax. I use the Ultimate Compound first which takes out all the minor scratches and water spots. I then take the deeper scratches out with the Scratch-X, or sometimes use Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover, which also works very well. Then polish with the Ultimate Polish and finish up with the NXT wax. It's been coming out really good, but damn it's ton of work. Let's just say my arms are getting one hell of a workout, but I don't mind.

So what does a shop charge to do something like you are having done? I should have had the dealership take care of this on their dime, but on the other hand I would have been a bit leery on what body shop they would have used. I'm about 80% done, so almost there now.

^^^ by hand???

You clearly have a lot of time on your hands (pun intended?).

A dealership will not cover paint correction. They will have their dealer prep guys buff out your car with a rotary if there are any scratches or imperfections. Leaving behind a ton of holograms.

You're best to do it yourself.

Yeah, I've just been doing a panel or two at a time when I have some free time - in no hurry as it will be done over time. Hasn't been that bad really, my arms did get sore on the first half of the car, but I must be getting in better shape as it doesn't bother me that much anymore. Now I know how the Karate Kid felt. :D

I wanted to honestly, but I figured I would just take the hit and have an actual professional do it.

I commend you for having the patience and skill to do it yourself. I've tried in the past but never could it get quite right. Its definitely not cheap to have a pro do everything for you, Most of the cost is labor not necessarily the materials themselves. They have had my car since Tuesday morning and I am getting my car back tomorrow. In total thats 4 working days spent on the car. I know 24 hours was dedicated to letting the Modesta BC04 cure by UV light. In total the paint correction part of it (Initial wash, clay, prep, polish, paint correct) cost me $800. The Modesta High resin coating was a whopping $1200. Was that worth it? I will let you know tomorrow :)

This my worry, last thing I wanted them to do was get their hands back on it and make a bad situation worse.

I looked at a red one on the lot and the orange peel was horrible. How have your cars been? I take delivery in about a month.

The ones I have seen (including mine) are average to slightly above average.

There is no fancy paint job on the Mustang. About what you would expect. Not bad, but nothing spectacular.

Certain parts of mine had some serious orange peel, others were fine. For example, the entire good was good but the painted hood vents were orange peel city

The paint on my black GT is pretty good actually. I've looked at every black vehicle I can find out in public and in the parking lots at work to compare, and I think the paint job on my black GT is just as good if not better than a lot. I saw a new black Toyota Tundra that had horrible orange peel, and also some Chevy trucks were pretty bad. The only cars that had better black paint jobs were Porsche or Lexus.

The only area that has more orange peel than the rest of the paint are the rear fender flares. I've looked at every 2015 Mustang (in every color) I can find, and the all have more orange peel on the rear fender flares than on the rest of the car. One could get just the fender flares buffed out professionally if they wanted it to match the rest of the car better. I have hand buffed on my rear fender flares quite a bit with a super light rubbing compound, then polished and wax them which did seem to help some.

I had my detailer picked the best product as he's far more experienced in this than I am. He said he chose the BC-04 titanium because it produces the best gloss on black paint for extremely hard protection. It also utilizes a wet application which is important on soft paints that mars easily like on the Mustang. They did 3 layers on the hood, fenders, roof, and top surfaces and two layers everywhere else.
