Put a K&N in my Fiesta and a year and a half later MAF completely fried from contamination...didn't use much oil after cleanings just thin coat.
I know I'll never use one again in my cars.
The Corvette was a horrible seller and a pretty slow "Sports car" the Thunderbird captured the spirit of actual performance with it's large V8 and high power and Chevrolet almost killed the Corvette project because it was getting slaughtered in sales.

Tim I agree completely...I was just giving an extremely basic view of each design. I've always struggled to understand why go to FPC on an engine like the coyote.

Cross Plane Cranks are heavier as a result of additional metal for balancing the engine. They generally produce more low end torque and less vibrations for durability and heavy loads etc.
Flat Planes are able to use less material on the shafts and are able to rev much higher with greater...
Well it's a roughly 4-5% horsepower difference (around 20hp probably)...and pulling 20hp would likely add 1.5-2.5 tenths to the 1/4 mile time....which comes out to roughly 1-2% actual performance difference over full 93 octane

The stock response of my previous 3 valve S197 was one of my only complaints about the car...it was very lazy at times.

Regarding the seat of your pants noticeability I can't speak for that personally. I have, however, spoken to a few people at local AutoX events that claim they did notice a difference in response while driving. I suppose it could be a placebo affect though.
