So from what I know the USB needs to be high speed and bidirectional to accommodate CarPlay features. Well CarPlay can also opperate wirelessly with Bluetooth and wifi, now the wifi has to be good enough as well.
OEMradio you tested the 2016 USB through an aftermarket CarPlay head unit?

I've got aGT with 3.331 gears and over 16,000 miles I've averaged 20.5MPG. This include very bad traffic for 25 miles everyday. So if you do mostly freeway without traffic you could do even better. I also don't drive slow, so I could do better.
