They probably based this off the STI (16/23). The golf R gets much better mpg for somewhat similar performance and being a tad lighter (22/31). This car will be somewhere in the middle. The AWD hurts, and making more power means more fuel - and they probably run it a bit rich with all those...

Sounds like a problem with the ECU. Go to a dealer you trust and/ or give Ford a call directly.
