How long does it take to assign a personal reg to a new car? With dealers taking delivery of cars on a largely "surprise" basis I imagine there may not be time to get the reg transfer done.

Shame you couldn't choose though. Few years back, I got a L/R Disco new & had about 10 to choose from; got my Wifes initials in the end... she loved that ;).
Oh well, it's only a plate.... it's the car that's the important thing isn't it?

If it's already on retention and off the car it was on, once you get 'wind' of the delivery, get the paperwork to the dealer, they should be able to transfer it for pick up. You'll probably need a valid insurance policy with the relevant new number, so they can tax it IIRC.

When I got my Nismo in 2013, there was some complication re the insurance, but the dealer squared it away about a week later, I got the new V5 in and just changed the plates myself.

My dealer says they will do it for me; when they know the delivery date to me they will ask me to take the V5 to them and they will switch the donor car to a new plate and swap the private plate to the mustang. They will swap the plates on my old car.

They give 7 days of fully comp insurance to make it all easier. I have done it this way a few times now...

My reg was done there an then at the dealers, when I took my paperwork in, so can't be particularly involved. I didn't even notice anyone do anything (even a phone call to DVLA), so maybe they just send a form off afterwards?

According to the Nissan dealer my wife used its all done online now. Still took them two weeks! :doh:

If you do it online, it changes all details over immediately.

Surprisingly my dealer called me yesterday, I was in a meeting and seen my phone ringing, I was hoping this is it its finally here but it wasn't, they wanted me to pop in and finalize the paperwork, I asked when is it likely to be here but they still seem to think its due at the end of January, even though its been at Southampton since the 19th December!

My guess is that it'll turn up much earlier. It's not going to hang around in Sotn for a month. Just 'put your affairs in order' and get ready for the "it's here" phone call. I think they come into Melton before Leicester, so it may even be there now!
