About to pull the trigger on Yokohama ice guards when I saw the quick connect rubber and metal chains that you run in between the wheel spokes instead of wrapping around the whole tire. Anybody have experience with these? We get a lot of ice here and a lot of snow.

From what I can see you do not have enough chains on the snow and ice at one time............ And trust me I have put on lots of chains in my Trucking Days... Go with the Snow Tires..... Just me........:cheers:

I wouldn't drive with those on my tires for longer than necessary. In other words, I'd strap them on when stuck in poor conditions and then remove them once I've cleared the mess.

Yea kind of what I was thinking. But for 30-40$ might be worth throwing them in the trunk to go along with snow tires. That way if it gets bad you can put them on. I drive less than 3 miles to work.

Dedicated snow tires. I've had Blizzaks on mine for a week and they're excellent. I'd also look at the new Conti Wintercontact Si, and of course the Michelin X-ice Xi3.

I was going to ask this.

What's the reasoning behind snow tires?
I'm planning to change tires and wheels (Thanks Paul) in spring, so I don't mind killing the 18" tires I have now with chains.

Or I could get snow tires on my 18" wheels and keep em for winter only...
Thoughts?

Snow tires are meant for winter snownice conditions their compound is made to not crack under cold temps and the more grooves help cut the snow and lwt the tire contact the ground

Thanks for that.

Now what would be the downside of chains?

I'm going to a 2000mi road trip in December through Yosemite, death valley, but then las vegas, grand canyon, sedona, phoenix and LA...

Not sure what the best setup would be...

Chains are not designed to be prolong use and high speed.

In that case snow tires even though your not supposed to use them for anything but anow and ice, but its alot better then using chains, chains are for short usage periods.
