Which is great except that
1) with chains you can't go very fast (not that you would want to)
2) in some states chains are forbidden unless conditions are really bad, because of the damage they can do to the road
For sure, you don't want chains on unless there is a good layer of packed snow/ice on the ground. + it's a slow ride with chains on.

This is my concern with buying a '15 Mustang. I've got to go up to get out of my driveway. Any other area I'd be driving I'd have few concerns because the roads are typically kept in pretty good conditions and I consider myself a decent driver on snow/ice.

So, does anyone have any experience with a new Mustang (or even an 05-14) in relation to going up a hill to get out of a driveway? Do 'winter' tires really help that much?
I live at the bottom of a hill and honestly doesn't matter what tires you have its all about weight. I had Blizzaks on my 2011 and if there was snow or ice it wouldn't make it up. I threw 250lbs of sand in the back and It would crawl right up. We got a late snow last year and I had already switched back to my summer tires threw sand in the back and went right up in 6 inches of snow.

They make the rubber studded chains now that you can drive hwy speeds with. They are expensive tho.

That's what I used to do in Oklahoma, throw sand in the back (usually just 100 lbs) and then it was Hakuna Matata for the winter. I've heard a lot of good things about the Blizzaks, I was thinking that PLUS the sand should fix the problem.

If you see my profile lists a Lancer - right now that is my daughter's car and I'm driving my wife's 2002 Taurus (she got a 2011 Ranger). It's tempting to keep the Taurus as a beater for winter driving but the car is having a number of electrical issues....so I'm not sure that's a good idea.

I live in Mn where you may have heard we have a winter. I got my GT in March. It drove fine in the snow and I live in the sticks. As long as the drifts aren't too deep it's fine. All of my cars from the last 30 years are RWD. Prior to the GT I daily drove a Miata MX5 all through the winter here. Fun. Practice and good decision making are essential. That said, real snow tires are worth their weight in gold.

And yes, there is a Snow/Wet mode that was stock on my GT Premium. Essentially it employs all the nannies and softens the throttle response. It works fine. I got used to the car and didn't use it anymore and we're still here.

Slade, isn't the GT delivered with Summer tires? What tires were you running in March? I'm trying to decide between Winter vs. all season for the coming months.

changing to an all season Goodyear Sport

I live in southern VA and we get snow storms but sporadically very bad last year.\ for some reason and an occasional Noreaster..

My 2007 GT/CS had 18 inch Goodyear all season sports and I did just fine. I sold that for a 2015 GT PP with the summer tires.. Below 40 degrees and sleet or snow I was very concerned .

So I went with a new rim and Goodyear Sport All season... I like the setup so I may keep them on all year round and use the Pirellis from the PP at the strip.

Thanks Hemistar1...I'm in NoVa, so only slightly North from you. All seasons year round would be a welcome solution. None of my driving is very challenging.
