So I did some spirited driving at a air strip of 150-30 repeats. I didn't actually mean to test the brake just happened running out of room but after 15 minutes and a couple 150-160-30 or 0 runs my rotors were almost red and smelling. Did I just wear them or just damage them? Figured my brakes were tough since its. A mustang but I did push em by accident. The smell worries me. I'm 95% sure its the brake. What do y'all think?

how many miles on your car? and it sounds like you did several repeated braking applications without cruising around to cool them off. IMO you probably didn't damage them. The most likely damage you can cause to a rotor is warping them. If you are familiar with that, it would be easy to tell. If you don't know what a warped rotor feels like, it would feel like a vibration in the brake pedal even with softer braking but more noticeable with hard braking, very different from ABS. You might even here a sound while braking that would sound repetitive. Not sure how else to describe it, explaining things really isn't my forte tbh. There are much better people here who can explain stuff to you than I can

I was more concerned with the smell, i was worried it was the clutch even though every shift was perfect. Drove it today and it feels fine. Those are some pretty hefty brakes. Note to self going 150 is 6.25 times more energy than 60 .

That's why I asked about miles, if ya haven't been hard on them before they'll do that. Bedding them in they'll even smoke a little

Brakes smell when they get very hot. FWIW, it's usually a good idea to drive around a bit after hard driving to allow the car's cooling systems to work before parking it. I'd be more concerned about brake pad deposits on the rotors at those temps. Stock brakes aren't really meant for hardcore track duty.

That being said, if you don't have a shudder in the steering or brake pedal, you're in the clear. If you do, well, now you know for next time.

6500 miles. Been hard on em before never like this though. All was good this morning. I also should say that I got rear suspension braces put in that keep the rear end from coming up so it felt like it wasnt braking like before or as hard but it really is.

no shudder or vibration thankfully, my girlfriend already hates my car(the way i drive) she would dump me in a heart beat if it shook while brreaking lol. After I smelt something I drove about 5 miles at 90 mph to cool her down. came to a stop by coasting , all is good. just paranoid when you have new things. :headbonk::cheers:

no such thing as warped brakes, but uneven brake pad deposits. Hopefully you let the brakes cool down before applying parking brake

Look at the surface of the rotors to check for any small cracks. Did you experience any fade?

Cracks fill look like this and can start out very fine and small.

Has the pedal gotten soft or are you back to normal braking feel?

it feels a little soft, but it still stops on a dime. i got rear braces put in to the car doesnt feel as powerful stopping enough though it is because no nosedive effect. Ill be sure to double check the fractures. I mean theyre 15in rotors, they got to be real damn tough.
