How much should you pay for custom dyno tuning

I was quoted $850 for custom dyno tuning and another $100 for an HP Tuners license. This would be after I install my FI kit.

Does this sound at all reasonable?

did that 850 include the handheld device? like the sctx4? Around here one place charges $400, and another real high end placed charged $500. So if the 850 includes the handheld then its about par for pricing.

Since you mentioned it, I'm not sure. I told them I have an NGauge. I don't think it included a tuner. It sounded like they weren't sure how it would work through the NGauge because it from Lund. I think the plan was to use HP to tune and flash? Not sure how all that work

As far as I understand it, Lund's nGauge is Lund-only. If the shop is using HPTuners, then you're just buying credits for their device (unless you get a HPTuners interface). FWIW, it only costs $50 for credits http://www.hptuners.com/products/vcmsuite_creditsfaq.php (An interface would come with I believe 8 credits.

Sounds about right, I went SCT + a custom dyno tune. I am happy with the tune, but I will still pick up an AED tune for comparison.

It's funny that you asked since you signature has them. It was JPC. I'm not trying to start a discussion of this and that vendors. I'm just trying make sure I'm paying what I should for something. It sounds like I need to verify some info with them which I will do today and go from there.

We can easily set you up with a remote dyno tune session from Lund Racing on one of their new nGauges. They would build you a base file off of your mods and then datalog part throttle and idle before it goes to the dyno. If all looks good you'll schedule a time with Lund Racing to remote tune the car on a local dyno and they'll wrap up the tune with the wide open throttle tuning.

This is a much better alternative then giving the local guy a shot at trying to figure it out. The experience level that Lund Racing has makes it a no brainer. Why give someone who has limited experience tuning these cars a shot at tuning yours when you can have the best tune it for you to begin with?

that's how 99.9% of reputable shops tune, the car sits on the dyno and does pull after pull. Some shops 'street tune', but that's not near as reliable/reputable as dyno tuning.

850 is high. Normally around 5-700 max.

Actually street tuning, if possible to do, I would think would be a little more "refined" than a dyno tune simply because you are datalogging in real conditions, and not on a dyno with very little true airflow.
