Why not do the deal with the deposit? They are simply trying to avoid being stuck with a special ordered car. Unless you aren't really sure about this car...just get a signed buyers order that states that the deposit IS refundable if the car does not get built
Realistically they will not be stuck with this car regardless of how I order it. After all It only really comes in 3 flavors. I only hesitate because I've ordered with $1k refundable in the past (seems to be the norm).

Non-refundable...sounds extremely suspect. You might want to have a written agreement with the negotiated price in there and allow for any contingencies.

Or simply walk away.
Yeah just not feeling non-refundable. Time to put my game face on and get them to kill that. I plan on having all of the details in writing before I agree.

WRONG! Negotiation is part of our culture when it comes to buying a new car...nothing sleezy about it. One businessman trying to sell at the highest price vs. one customer trying to buy at the lowest price. If you want a one price no haggle deal, buy your cars from CarMax
This crap is exactly why people like me love what Tesla is doing and wish every car company could sell directly to the public. We are at a time where we no longer need a dealership/middleman to buy a car. Dealerships serve no purpose any more other than to piss everyone off and waste your time

Indeed! and some piss away fancy $15 a bottle beer when $1 a bottle beer will do the trick! What about those baboons?
You live in the Bay Area and you're one of those guys?

Sounds practical jimmypop until your Tesla is involved in an accident and parts are needed for repair, or if a recall is issued and a repair/parts replacement is needed, etc. What are you going to do, wait weeks for parts to be shipped and be out of your transportation, or hope to find someone locally who has expertise on correcting the recall issue...

Wrong... Negotiations called Haggling are a part of the car dealership culture. Regardless of what you know should be the price.

When you walk into a retail store and have to haggle let us know. Those days of commisionsed sales are pretty much gone in the retail world, We've all evolved. The Auto Dealership however...hasn't. Except for Tesla. And what used to be Saturn. And possibly in the near future... Google and Apple.

Perhaps there will be an entity like CARMAX that will transform the buying experience for all of us to simulate a direct buy. Who knows? ;-)

^ WOW what a naivé response.

If Ford or any of the big manufacturers finally get around to adopting a direct buy model... you certainly wouldn't be waiting around for parts fulfillment or dreading a recall.

Do you own a Tesla jimmypop?...your profile info. says that you have a Chevy. How do you know that their system is going to work on a large scale (15-17 million cars sold in this country annually and parts/service available locally on a timely basis) It's easy to be critical of the system, but in the big scheme of things, the franchised dealer system works pretty well. Not perfect but no system is. Don't get me wrong, I believe that competition is a great thing and brings about positive change over time. It is one of the things that makes our free enterprise system work so well....We'll see how this Tesla thing works out as their numbers rise and how their system impacts the way things get done in the autotive industry

Because FORD already proved it in 1999-2000 with a direct buy model on their used car divisions within their MANUFACTURER owned dealer network which was a concept they were about to flip into their new car sales divisions.

Oh but guess what happened. The dealerships crapped their pants and hired lawyers backed by NADA to mire the legal system with a lot of other laws to try and protect their existing selling model.

I wonder what manufacturers are currently backing market research for elegant ways to eliminate the antiquated dealership model once again????... using the precedence set by you guessed it...TESLA.

Hmmmm???

OK then Cruzinaround, since I'm so naive, educate me on how it works with Tesla now...how do they deal with these issues? I live in the Atlanta area where traffic and accidents are real life everyday, so this is not an obscure issue! If i'm "Cruzinaround" in my Tesla and some guy rear ends me on I-285, where do I get the parts to fix it? I'll take my lumps if I'm wrong, or uninformed but help me to understand...

Sick of hearing about how great Tesla is when we all know how inconsequential their numbers are compared to the rest of the automotive industry in the US. People are just repeating the same mantra from the media about how great they are before thinking it all through...reminds me of the Democratic party! Now I've gone so far off topic that I'm boring myself now. Done with this ridiculous blog!

Naivé ... Because...

You're assuming when Ford or GM or FCA etc etc... Pull the direct buy card that they don't have the ability to deal with such contingencies.

But, as for Tesla.... With as small a market they have... They do offer a courtesy vehicle while things are in their channels for such things. Which is more than some traditional dealerships provide. I know as a witness to my friend having been rear ended in NYC. Called into insurance and then to the Tesla salesman... Boom. Taken care of.

And Spa2k.... Get your observations correct. I have never pulled the polical, religious or race card.... I've always responded to it from people too mired with the status quo and eventually too frustrated to think outside that stifled box. So they resort to politics, religion and race.

Just saying.

You're outside your contrarian boundaries, but obviously trolling for some new interactions. I said nothing - didn't even hint at - religion or race. Just my opinion here, but I'd like to get back to talking about cars ...
