I know there is a 18 page thread about this. Just wondering what configuration this thud happens in. Trying to gather some information. I just ordered a GT PP and waiting for it to be built now. I think if there was a poll that we can see what configuration it is happening in most and Ford needs to fix something

So
1. GT PP
2. GT What rear gear ratio
3. Ecoboost PP
4. Ecoboost What rear gear ratio
5. V6

GT PP. Stock 3:73 gears.
Same GT PP 3:73 torsen rear end, i like the sound ya know its locked :headbang: especially during gear bangin, sounds like a bomb going off and if ya have one then you know what i am talking about! Listen to the video when a gear is hit you can hear a bang or a thud!! You know its locked in hard!!

FORD NEEDS TO FIX NOTHING ITS A HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVELINE

I wouldn't necessarily blame the Torsen if you're dealing with a clunk issue. Torsen might squeak or click while turning, but clunks - especially in a straight line - are probably something else. If a differential is generating a discernible clunk in a straight line, then something is probably wrong.

OTOH, the manual transmissions were known to have backlash/NVH issues - which is your typical clunk - in the S197, and I've seen little reason to believe that its been cured for S550.

? sounds as it is coming from the rear end for me but sound is only when I shift yes I get a click on turning also but for a thud as the poll is asking is what i hear during hard shifting and i promise nothing is wrong with anything, its how it should sound if you have the gt pp 3:73 torsen set up

If you are not hearing a bang or a thud during shifting in a straight line then you have a weak non locking drive line loosing power somewhere???!!!

Driveline NVH is incredibly deceptive; sounds travel up and down shafts and present in areas other than where they originate. Again, a thud or clunk while shifting is probably transmission (though could be bearing, U-joint, etc). If a thud while shifting does indeed originate in the rear end - be it Torsen, R&P, or bearing - it is a likely sign of a problem, because thuds occur when there is excessive backlash. The differential itself has relatively low backlash going from coast to drive or a neutral condition to drive, as does the axle carrier as a whole. The transmission, not so much. If the backlash opened up a lot in a fairly young carrier, the reason for that is excessive wear or possible damage.

Also, FWIW, consider that bangs and thuds during shifting in a straight line are the consequence of giving the driveline a harsh impact spike load. Yes, that happens when shifting hard and during a drag race, etc., but that doesn't mean its something the driveline enjoys...

i don't think it enjoys it either but i do lol every PP ive road in only MT82's has thuded during hard shifts. I think a thud is better than a slip or grind less wear with a bang. I have never drove or rode in a high performance manual transmission and a torsen or detroit locker rear end car that has not made a thud or a bang when bangin gears this is not a lincoln its gonna make some noise

GT 3.55 I don't have PP. Thud is intermittent and not too loud but still noticeable.

Sure, it's going to make some noise. My point is that certain components make noise more normally than others. If something that doesn't normally make a lot of noise starts to do so, you should be asking yourself why.

Also, there is an acceptability threshold of how much is OK, which is something that Ford has to deal with when developing the powertrain & driveline as a system. You might be OK with some noise, but for a lot of customers, that means a warranty claim (justified or not). Warranty claims are not something that Ford prefers to deal with, so they try to keep that threshold of what's allowed low. Warranty claims cost money. If there are a lot of people that are experiencing noticeable thuds or clunks in the their driveline while shifting, I guarantee you that Ford is working on it, even if they haven't said anything official about it.
