S550 VS. S650 Body Style

Ah, got it. And did you buy them from Ford Parts or Ebay or somewhere else?

All were ford parts. Doors/pulls from dealership and the chrome delete door lock was from eBay. All in all about 250 dollars total investment.

Overall I prefer the S550 body style, especially the front end. It's sleeker and more graceful.
I also hate how the S650 has more dull, unpainted black trim. It looks more like a truck.

I haven't been inside an S650 but photos make the interior (dash) look kind of bland and functional (not in terms of materials, but just styling). The S550 dash has more interesting shapes, contours, and contrasting materials.

Yes, agreed!

The S650's rear end have those angles in the taillights that I'm not a fan of, and the rear bumper has too much flat black on the rear diffuser. The front end is OK, just can't believe they copied the Camaro's heat extractors on the GT hood and the sides also!

Everyone hates the new generation. I bet if you pulled the first few days of posting after the 550 was announced you'll find massive amounts of haters. I like certain things about the 650 and dislike others it's all relative to your taste.

I think the S650 styling is fine. The tail isn't as beautiful as the S550, but I don't mind it at all. It's true to Mustang roots, looking a little like the '67 rear. The side view only has some slight changes as the greenhouse is the same. I think the nose is good when the dark bags under the eyes aren't present.

To me it looks nothing like a Camaro and I don't see any styling "borrowed" from the Camaro at all. I owned a Camaro recently for a couple years, so I'm very familiar with the shape. Ford and Honda's design language have some similarities, but that is common for other brands to rip off Ford. They stole the Explorer grill design really quickly a few years ago and I've seen that on multiple imports. The Honda thing bugged me initially, but I've let it go at this point.

What I don't like in the S650 are electronic braking, lack of physical controls inside, spray bore cylinder liners, direct injection, etc. I'm glad Ford went back to a steel oil pan, so that is one positive. The deal breakers are the high price, OTA software updates and telematics.

Having said all those negative things, if the S550 didn't exist I would be interested in the S650. I like Ford generally and I think the Mustang continues to be a decent car (in the context of the malaise of modern car electronics and surveillance +high complexity we are all living with). The S197 appeals to me a little more than the S650 as well. So S650 places third in my hierarchy of Mustang preferences.

The thing I like about the S550 that just screams Mustang to me are the strong upper and lower creases on the side. Brings me back to my '69. They've mostly disappeared on the S650, which always used to make me think Camaro (similar shape car, but missing the styling cue that always caught my eye). I realize not every gen/model Mustang featured this look, but it's just where my mind goes.

the 650 exterior grew on me but the dash is still awful and the fact that the car only got heavier makes it a non starter. these cars were already too heavy.

the analog gauges still make me happy.

Both Mustangs have a wider crease in the back and the Camaro has the wider crease in the front. Bottom line to me is I don't see the S650 copying the Camaro in any way. They are two door coupes, but other than that, they are a little different from each other.

I get what you're saying. To me, the creases are sharper and more distinct on the S550. It's not that I've ever totally confused the 650 with the Camaro, just when they first came out, my brain didn't immediately recognize them and Camaro was what would pop into my head at first, followed by a moment of confusion until I sorted it out (this all in seconds). Eventually I began to recognize them at a glance. Obviously, when you study them all, you see the similarities and the differences.

I can't see a single similarity. If I see an S650 from the rear, obviously not a Camaro. If I see it from the front, obviously not a Camaro. From the side it looks the most like an S550 to me with the shape of the top and size of the windows being identical to an S550.

Even getting into details, the body line in Mustangs passes through the door handle, not below it.

The hood vents look almost identical. I'll give you that. But there's no way someone would confuse the two cars based on that. I didn't even notice they had that similarity until you pointed it out.

The side haunches have no specific unique shapes that are the same or even similar. The S650 Mustang body line terminates into a downward line. The S550 line just stops. The Camaro body line is curved in that area. If you start looking at a 2 inch square area of sheet metal and saying it's similar, to me that becomes nonsensical. Every 1/4 panel in the world looks the same from a close enough perspective.

Bottom line to me, I don't think Ford would have deliberately copied styling from a car that had such poor sales. I liked the performance of my Camaro, but I understand why it didn't sell well. I bought mine in black to hide some of the ugly.
