Wasn't sure where best to put this post. My GT is fully stock besides an X-pipe. I'm looking to buy a tune to run now that will retain some value if I go F/I later using a kit that doesn't include a tune (like ESS).

The thought is I'd be able to re-use the hardware and be eligible for a discounted F/I tune if needed.

The hardware may be just as important to me as the tuner (most things equal). It seems like the well-regarded tuners only support specific devices. I plan to run 93, but want to make sure I can flash 91/stock if I end up somewhere that doesn't offer 93.

Do all devices support storing 2 tunes (or 1 + stock) and let you flash without needing a laptop? The Mustang is our road trip car and I don't want to have to worry about available octanes or remember to flash the ECU before leaving- and I definitely won't be bringing a laptop.

I went with Wengerd for my FI tune, and he has done a bang up job with it.
He can tune N/A as well.
If I remember correctly, you can tune N/A now, and when you go FI the upgraded tune for that will be heavily discounted?
I think the HPT RTD device is pretty common amongst tuners these days.
I would pick who you want to to tune the car, and go with the device they use the most.

Thanks. I've been looking at Wengerd. Does the RTD device allow you to flash without needing a laptop? IIRC a laptop is needed to load the tune(s) onto the RTD, which is fine. I just want to make sure I can tune while on the road without needing the laptop.

You want to tune on the road or switch tunes on the road?

Two very different things.

Ask your tuner:

can device X hold multiple tunes?

do I need a laptop or a phone to switch tunes or can I just use the device?

The RTD logs and loads the tune using Bluetooth from TDN(tune delivery network)an app on your phone. The tuner will upload a tune to TDN and your phone pulls it from the app and sends it to the RTD(remote tuning device) via Bluetooth. You can store multiple tunes on your phone in the TDN app.

Wengerd supports the AVID device too. That device is nice as you don't need your phone as a companion for it; I have set mine up with hotspot to my phone though. As long as it has a connection (wifi at work, wifi at home, or hotspot from phone if you're out and about) you can "sync" tune updates and flash them to the car from the device. Then you can go data log and send those files right from the device. Also is a pretty nice dash gauge.

I ordered one the other day. Should arrive tomorrow. Looks like an actually modern device!
