In this video, I trailer my brand spanking new Rapid Red 2020 Shelby GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Pack to the paint protection film, ceramic coating and window tint shop. We see their process during some gratuitous car porn set to music! I hope you enjoy... lots of time went into editing this video!

Top quality as always. What CF mirror caps did you use?
Thank you sir! They are a cheap option from CJ Pony Parts. They were something like $120 and look excellent in my opinion.

Was your PPF guy able to cover the entire finish plate? The finish plate either side of the snake has grooves. My xpel guy is saying that the template has cutouts around the grooves and a previous attempt to fully cover the grooves left an air bubble. I read between the lines and it seems your guy got the PPF to cover the whole plate with no cutouts??

See areas circled in red below......

Yes, that is standard the way Xpel provides the template. The installer can delete the cutout if he wishes. I've heard of the groove being xpel'd and just because a guy is lazy doesn't mean its right.

Tom, the shop I went to does not use templates. It is all custom hand cut, which gives superior results. You can see the installer hand trimming and tucking the edges in the video.

Having said that, I did not opt to have the entire car covered in film. It would be crazy expensive at a custom shop like this one. I explain all the areas I had covered at the end of the video. That black panel in question only got ceramic coated.

I'm not saying its right, or wrong. I see no reason to even risk the air bubble, or lifting film edges, just to cover an area that will never be touched. But you know what they say about opinions......

Thanks Tim, yes, I did see that they custom cut.

Copy the negative Xpel on the finish panel. Thanks for the reply.

Jamie,

I hate cuts and seams where they don't have to be. They collect dirt and grime. A member here says his installer wont have a cutout and seems to think that there will be no air bubble. So I will wait and see.

As everyone eventually finds out, that gloss black rear panel is super susceptible to scratching. Ceramic will eliminate most of that threat, but something I have been doing with the CFTP is never touching that panel. When I go to open or close the trunk, I use the left wing mount, which works great as a handle.

I can appreciate your concern. From the past 5 months of washing and wiping my car, I can honestly say it has not been an issue. The other thing to consider, while trying for a seamless approach, unless you completely remove the cobra emblem and film under it, you will also have the seam around it (mine does). As you know, the emblem isn’t designed to be removed, but it can be with some work. If you go down this road, and something damages the film, like putting your golf clubs in the trunk (), it would be a project to get it replaced. If you use the template it’s easy peasy. I do agree with you about full coverage being the better of the two options for protection alone. I would choose that for almost all another applications, but for the trunk panel, I’m satisfied with the template.

I know you well enough to know that you will seek out what works best for you, and that’s all that matters.

I will say I was happy to have the film, because my last few cars would get scratches on the rear panel if I stared hard enough at it, lol.

OK, I tried to resist. The cf rear view mirror covers look real good. Do you have a link for them? I already looked at CJ and there were a bunch of options. I have an electronics package
