Does anyone experience "short grinding" noise when starting car?

Sounds like a slipping accessory belt, but that shouldn't cause the wrench to light up.

You could maybe buy an OBD II reader. Since it is showing the wrench icon, it should have a code as to what individual system is causing the wrench to light up.

it is not dependent on weather. but if i put my foot on the brake and start the car right away it makes that screeching noise, and then wrench. It i put my foot on the brake and wait a bit before starting the engine, it is fine. Although i am unsure if this is related, but the car died two times and had to be jumped, after the wrench light came on. Brought the car into the dealer and said that the battery caused the wrench and nothing else is wrong. I do not know if i can believe the dealer...your thoughts?

Have they checked the voltage from battery and not causing a charging issue with alternator? sound you hear could be the belt. Could be your fuse for the alternator. Lots of times bad battery will kill the alternator. Or that fuse .

Just got a new battery installed by the dealer on Friday. Sunday the wrench light came back on when started car. I think it may be attributed to starter but I am not the expert. Told dealer about starting issue and they are unable to replicate. My plan is to video tape next time this happens.

Maybe a bad ground..that's intermittently causing problems..please keep us posted and good luck

Unfortunately, all jesting aside, an intermittent problem is not easy to isolate. I work in electro-mechanical maintenance and often is the time that the operator of the equipment cannot duplicate the fault they are having after putting in a work order. So what is a person to do? Do you throw parts at the problem guessing? Not unless that is a last resort and you have at least determined what system on the equipment is causing the problem. Do you ignore it? No, but you still keep tabs on it and as well so does the operator (in your case car owner) and work the problem together. Believe me Karen, no technician - with any self respect - wants to admit they cannot duplicate the problem. Those of us that go into this line of work - regardless of the type of equipment - are problem solvers. We seek to troubleshoot and resolve issues...most of us that is.

Video tape the problem as you have stated you will do. Pay close attention and take notes when it happens. Notate if the weather has any bearing on if/when it happens. Every little thing you can detail will only help a good technician resolve the issue. Get the service manager involved. And above all don't present yourself as someone with a chip on their shoulder that thinks the world is out to get them just because of their gender/race/appearance/etc. Your effort to inquire hear has put you above that already in my humble opinion. Stay on that professional level of attack.

Sorry I can't be more than a cheerleader and encourager for you at this point. Without being able to hear and see what the car is doing first hand it is hard to even begin to make a layman's hypothesis as to where to begin.

It may require seeking out a more reliable Ford Dealer. Try researching the symptom through YAHOO, BING, or DUCKDUCKGO. Trust me I have been there myself. I know what its like to have to take a vehicle back several times before they can duplicate the problem and resolve it.

I'm thinking the noise is a belt. Whatever is causing the belt to screech might be causing the starter to draw more amps throwing the battery error. The likely candidate is the A/C compressor/clutch.
