Hey guys,

I'm torn between running 6.5" 2-way Coaxials VS 6.5" 2-way Splits in the rear stage.

Anyone running 2-way splits in the rear? Is it worth the extra effort (& cost) of mounting the Tweeters into the rear pillars?

Where would you position the rear tweeters? Mount them in the pillars or in pods on the parcel shelf, or in the rear side panels?

Advice appreciated.

I think the consensus is pretty much that the rears are a waste of time from an imaging point of view. A 3 way active front stage with a subwoofer is the agreed upon optimal setup for our cars. I added coaxials to my 15 and it was a very mediocre before/after. Adding components to the front was what made the big difference.

Thanks for the feedback :)

The problem is I have teen kids who sit in the back sometimes, and they like to stream their own music. I was thinking of (at the very least) just putting in some decent 2-Way Coaxials which are appropriately matched to the front stage so there's a fuller range at the back too. I think I'm also leaning towards the fact that 2-way splits at the rear is overkill, and might just go with some matched 6.5" coaxials (i.e. same brand and product range - Focal Flax Series).

You have the premium without the sub right? I think I read somewhere here that in that version of the system it doesn't send full range to the rear.

Of course if you're going to bypass the stock amp, then disregard my post.

Yeah, I have the Premium with the 9 Speaker Shaker system (without Subwoofer).

I guess if I'm going to upgrade to higher fidelity speakers, there's no point retaining the factory amp, so I'm planning to bypass it and go with a higher-powered Focal Class A/B amp to match the Focal Flax speakers.

I might check out the HERTZ MILLE PRO range of 6.5" Component & Coaxial speakers too as I've read great reviews about those.

No Problem!

You're a great dad to be considering the kids in the build. I absolutely loved the Focal Flax speakers when they were demoed to me a few years back (I believe they were relatively new at the time). I would just caution you not to go with anything too bright as those tweeters will be bouncing off of the steeply raked rear glass towards the backs of the rear occupants' heads. I have a Premium with the 9 speaker system as well and have plans to upgrade Speakers, Amps and add one or two subs. I would suggest you consider adding a DSP to your build, as that will help you perfect the imaging in the cabin for any possible passenger arrangement. I'm currently working with @hextails550 to get a harness for my vehicle that will make the whole thing a lot easier than it could be.

With that being said, I see from your signature that you're eyeing the JL Stealthbox and the Focal Flax series. I think that (properly tuned and powered ) will be adequate, and the rear fill wouldn't need to be anything extravagant. I'd spend the money on the DSP and get some 6.5 raw drivers on PartsExpress to maximize value.

I'm using a pair of Focal coaxials (IC 165TOY) for the rear and I love them. If I ever change them going forward, I might get the K2 power coaxial or Hertz. But I can vouch for the fact that the Focal coaxial definitely make a lot of difference if you wish to retain the rear channel!

Thanks for the DSP suggestion. I'll definitely look into it :)

Yep, I was eyeing the JL Stealthbox initially, but it seems to be a lot of coin (~$1.5k in Australia) for what it is. Maybe I'll just get a Focal Bomba BP20 powered sub (8") instead as it's suppose to be really good and tight sounding.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. The IC165TOY are specific to the Toyota's right? Did they just drop right in for you? Nice! :)

I'll be going with the Focal Flax Coaxials in the parcel shelf, powered by the Focal FPX 4.400SQ 4-Channel Amp.

Absolutely! Just minor adjustments and they fit right in. Also, mine are powered off the stock amplifier; hence, it's much obvious that yours will sound much better being powered by the Focal amp.

Was just going through your previous post, try and listen to the Focal bomba or any powered sub before you have it installed. I haven't had the best experience with those, so I just thought of sharing it with you! Good luck, and have fun building your system
