I feel like the wheel "back order" excuse is the same as the magnaride "allotment" excuse, false. There must be some other reason that they are having production issues but they just wont say the real reason.
Sounds about right. No facts and lots of confusion. I just tried the Ford Performance chat again, with no real answers.

I asked about a potential wheel supply issue affecting 2018 Mustang production. Here is most of the conversation:

Matt K says: Hello Jeff. Not that I am aware of. Keep in mind, if you had a Performance Pack 2 car, they were not built in the cold due to the tires cracking.

Matt K says: If you have a vin, or dealer # and order # I can check the status of your order.

Jeff says: I ordered a PP1 on 2/27 and still no VIN. Cotus shows I ordered an F-150. Dealer code is Fxxxxx and order is xxxx.

Matt K says: It shows as unscheduled. Since it was ordered so recently, it is not a surprise that it is not scheduled yet.

Matt K says: A supplier issue isn't really something that Ford can control. Also, fyi, it generally takes about 3 months from order to delivery for a special order vehicle.

Jeff says: I understand. However, Ford is not even able to figure out when they will start taking 2019 orders, stop 2018 orders, etc. They already missed the schedule they published. And communication is terrible. Latest word is that "anything with a power package won't be built until 5/28" due to the wheel supply problem. Per my dealer from their Ford rep.

Matt K says: I can not confirm that, as we only have the current status of the vehicle. I have not heard of that, and also if there is an issue with parts or something like that, our system will say material hold, which yours does not. I think someone is telling you incorrect info...

Jeff says: Getting any facts is nearly impossible. I'm sure Ford will never publicly confirm these supply issues as it will only do them harm.

Matt K says: Again, I really doubt that is actually the case as your vehicle does not say material hold.

I quoted him word for word. "Anything with a PP" were his words, in an email. He also stated that an Expedition he ordered around Christmas still hasn't arrived, and he's not sure they even got a VIN yet. Sounded like a similar wheel restraint issue.
Google.com is your friend...It is very well known that the expedition and navigator are selling way faster than anybody ever expected. The plant simply can't keep up with demands. It takes time for a car to be built...it isn't amazon.

That's interesting.. maybe your dealer is out of allotments? and is trying to get one from another dealer?

My salesman told me the other day that they had requested to use their last 2 allocations to have my car and another built. They have yet to receive a reply on the allocation request.

Guys. stang33's order was placed 15 days ago. Things take time...Last time I ordered a Mustang it was the better part of 8 weeks before any movement as far as the order is concerned...Also, we know that dealerships will tell you anything, just to get you to stop bugging them. I wouldn't believe much of what they say... ;)

*edit, god I can't type today

Then that's why you have no vin yet

My car was ordered 2/17 vin was given 5 days later, but like you said its all about which dealer you use, I happened to stumble upon one of the largest mustang dealers around, and that's where I placed my order even though it out of state.

To be clear, I'm not expecting the car to be delivered this week, this month, or even in April. Based on the timeline I've seen others experience, it's not unreasonable to get a VIN within 2 weeks after getting a dealer order aknowledgement. I'm past 2 weeks and have nothing. COTUS shows my order being for an F-150. For me. not knowing anything is worse than being told that I have to wait longer. My ordering experience has been less than impressive up to this point, but my dealer has been nothing other than helpful and honest with me. I've made lots of car deals before, and I walked from another Ford dealer before ordering from my current dealer. If anyone at Ford, my dealer, or anyone else feels like I am bugging them, I really can't care less.

I placed my PP2 order on 2/17 and got a VIN a little over a week later. My estimated delivery date is now set for 4/14. Originally it was set to 4/20 and it updated to be 6 days shorter on Friday. Seems like they process these orders pretty fast.

Yes, and I have seen others with similar timelines. This is why I suspect something has definitely changed, for the worse.

The only other thing I will say that I am going through a very high volume dealer. I don't know if that comes into play with orders or anything like that.

What’s odd to me is that there are two people who posted above that both ordered on 17 February and have EDDs over a month apart. There isn’t an obvious method to how orders are prioritized. Does PP2 have priority over PP1?

I'm also a 2/17 order (rec'd by Ford on 2/19) and my EDD is 4/23, up from 4/27.

I have the same order date of 2/17 bur EDD of 5/17 for a PP1 car. There are many factors that can go into the order process such as priority numbers, the dealer can set a priority number anywhere from 10-99, 99 being the slowest and 10 being the fastest that the dealer can give, I do think cars can be given 1-10 only by a executive, I think don't quote me on that.

Regardless, based on my personal experience and many many others experience that I have read about, I think everyone would have to agree the 2018 model year order/schedule/build/deliver process has been a major snafu.
