Unfortunately I managed to run over a plastic bag that melted to my exhaust. I took a razor blade and scrapped away what I could and used some sand paper to try to get the small stuff off. I thought I did a decent job but I can still smell it when I get out of my car after a long drive. Anyone encounter this, and if so, how long will the smell last, and did you do anything to help the process along. Smells pretty bad.

2 options:

1) Remove the exhaust off of the vehicle; use a hand held torch to burn away the plastic from the exhaust. After it’s burned away, use sand paper or 3M body pad to get any remaining plastic bits off the metal.

2) Carefully get the car up on a lift, jackstands or ramps. Once it’s suspended safely, use a handheld torch and carefully hold the torch away from the offending plastic (and vehicle underside, brake lines, fuel lines, gas tank), but so the heat from the torch flame will melt the remaining plastic. You can let the plastic harden again and try scraping it, but it’s far faster melting it off the exhaust components. DO NOT TORCH THE PLASTIC IF UNDER THE CAR - the plastic WILL CATCH FIRE!

IF the plastic was wrapped around the exhaust and it burned/melted to the TOP side of the exhaust, the only way to remove it would be it Option 1 above, as it’s not safe at all to try Option 2.

Where did the bag get stuck?

Run the engine in a lower gear and burn it off. I had exact same thing happen, I just ran at 4k rpms on highway for about 30 minutes.

It got stuck right at the step down where the Corsa cat back goes into the factory down pipes

You can use acetone (MAKE SURE TO NOT GET IT ON ANY OTHER PLASTIC OR PAINT).

The acetone will melt/dissolve the bag with ease. Get some at home depot or lowes and just wipe the area down.

Be very careful with full strength acetone though.
