So after 10k miles, the pzeros (rears at least) are ready for replacement. Browsing the forum has found lots of great info and advice regarding tyres for performance, however it's a bit of a mine field if you're looking for something more suited to daily driving.

My car is mostly used for commuting along with the odd enthusiastic blast when conditions permit. I do like to drive at pace, but not at the vehicle's limits (nor mine for that matter) and not as aggressively as your average Beemer/Audi driver.

What I'm trying to avoid is spending upwards of £200 a corner on something that is amazing when driven hard in dry conditions but not so grippy in the wet and will be bald in another 10k miles.

There are options out there for around the £150 mark that, on paper, perform well in the wet and are good for fuel economy. But what are ther really like when you put 412bhp through them?

I have Michelin PS3 on the rear at the moment (with the original Pirellis on the front).

I am absolutely blown away by the improvement.

PS3s are well suited to daily driving in colder or wet conditions. They are nowhere near the top of the Michelin tree, but they are so much better than the Pirellis, you cant even compare.

Grip is good (wet and dry).
Tyre noise is fine (no worse than the OEM)

The most important aspect for me is that when the car does start to slide or lose grip, its infinitely more predictable and linear with the PS3s. They are actually a joy to get a little bit loose on.

All this for €150 per tyre on the rear (so maybe 130 GBP in the UK?)

As an aside, they also seem to be wearing well :)

Best wet performance:

Uniroyal Rainsport 3
Michelin PS4
Goodyear F1AS2/3
Continental Sport 5/6
Michelin PS3

All above are great wet performers.

The MPSS should also be considered, it too is also fantastic in the wet though PS4/PS4 S are superior and in cold wet PS3 would probably rival/beat it. Advantage of MPSS is longevity they should get you around 15k from a rear set in comparison. :)

Thanks for the recommends. Aiming to get it sorted this week as rear LHS is down to the wear marker!

I have RainSport 3 on mine, they were just over £100 a corner. Grip in the wet is incredible, dry seems to be on point as well.

Said it many times, nothing can touch these in the wet in the real world. They are so close performance wise to cut wet slicks it is unreal to the point most of the E46 M3 boys now with track cars just fit rainsport 3's as their daily tyre and wet track tyre and have another set of wheels with semi slicks or slicks on for dry track work.

They are also hugely effective at prevent aqua planing.

Another vote for MPSS here. Have them on my rears and they are an instant mega improvement in the wet over the original Zeros.

Not had one instant yet despite the cold and flood conditions around here.

Would be interested if anyone has fit Falkens as I'm on my second set on my old series 3 BMW and can't fault them especially in dodgy conditions.

FK-453 is one of the better budget tyres, good all rounder, but they do not come close to MPSS, but they are vast amounts cheaper.

But if I was going budget, the Rainsport 3 really is the tyre to beat, nothing can rival is wet ability and though it gets a bit mushy when pushed hard on warmer dry days it will cope, but they do wear quick in summer if you push them.

If I was worried about winter and running two sets of wheels, I'd have Rainsport 3 for winter months and MPSS/PS4s for Summer, but I find MPSS are more than capable even in the cold and wet.

Gibbo's beat us all to the information that 'matters' most of us who changed are running MPSS' (including myself) it gets a vote from me. although as I found out this week, the treads caked in mud doesn't help for the grip (but why would they lol!)

I was interested to read that, isn't Rainsport 3 also a summer tyre?
What do you reckon for proper winter tyres for the Mustang, such as if you're going to the places in Europe that mandate snow capable tyres in winter?

If you need snow ability, I've found Continental tend to be the best, really good in snow, also Michelin Alpin Sport I think they are called are good in light snow and are still sporty feeling, had them on the EVO.

But if you think your gonna be driving on snow covered roads, Rainsport 3 will not perform, they work exceptionally well in heavy wet/cold conditions but in snow they are not great just like any other summer tyre.

A winter tyre is definetely the place to go if you live in Scotland or plan on travelling Europe with snow covered roads, they make a dramatic difference in grip on snow covered roads and when temperatures go below freezing in wet/dry conditions.

Ive had RS3s on various cars over the years and they are a brilliant performer that punch well above their price class.

The only downside is the dry/hot wear rate. They will disappear before your eyes. Probably some of the fastest wearing tyres ive ever experienced.

I'm on Nokian WRA4 winter tyres. Pleased with them so far but not had much real snow to test them. Wet grip seems good. A winter tyre will perform better than summer tyre when temperature is below 7C.
I had Nokian winters on my previous car, they are a winter tyre specialist.
