Just recently my ac started releasing a chemical type odor when I turn it on then it eventually goes away as the ac continues running. Usually the smell is the worst when the car sits for 2-3 days. I changed my cabin filter to a carbon filter and thought I cured it but the odor is back.

Any ideas on what this can possibly be?

How many miles are on your car? Did you just start using the AC?

If you have not run it or the car is new, it could be resins drying. Keep it running for a while next time you go out with the windows open and the AC set to pull outside air. If that does not help, see your dealer.

are you sure you are not smelling mildew? make sure the drain hose from the evaporator core is not clogged.

Check the TSB subforum on here - the AC evaporator is known for failures - and owners have reported that when it is leaking, there is a similar odor as to what you are describing.

Mileage reports are all over the place as well, no specific mileage failure link and replacement requires entire dash removal. It's all repaired under warranty.
