I prefer my Mustang

I went on one of those super car drive days last Friday at Upper Heyford. It was a Christmas present from my kids.

I was to drive a Lamborghini, an Aston DB9 and a Ferrari but I saw that they had a beautiful 1968 GT500 Fastback so I swapped the Fezza for that.

Loved the Mustang and the instructor got me to push it on the track. Great fun even with no power steering and non servoed brakes.

As to the Aston and the Gallardo, I thought they were pretty meh! and I couldn't wait to get back into my own S550

Honestly, my GT felt faster, handled better, stopped quicker and has a better interior.

Granted the two super cars were much older than mine but they certainly didn't feel prestige.

The Lambo always gets ya. How they could get the Gallardo so wrong I do not know, it was my dream car, ever since a friend got one the noise it made (V10) and the incredible loud styling it was my dream.

Then I got to drive one on the road and at Silverstone at full chat (150mph down hangar straight) and the whole car was just annoying to me. The pedals I could not get used to due to them being offset and my size 10's were just to big to get along with that.

Then the driving position and visibility, well it reminded me of a Camaro I was driving blinding, unable to spot apex's and it just felt not at one with the car. Then came the driving, yeah it gripped like shit to a blanket but oh my this car had no soul, it was the most boring 500BHP I had driven, yes it was quick but there was no excitement, danger or thrill.

DB9's are full on cruisers really not suited to track work at all, except for the very latest ones which are bloody fantastic, but the older ones are big heavy GT cruisers and old. I had a lot more fun in V8 Vantages which in a way are like a Mustang but show their age a bit and the Mustang pretty much does everything that bit better than the V8 vantages of a few years ago.

GT500 good should, proper car, proper old school driving and if your smooth on a track you can still get decent pace from them, though how everyone complained about PS, ABS and other creature comforts, now when you lose them you cannot wait to get back into a modern car.

Shame you did not drive the Fezza, on track even though its old the 360, particular F1 Modena are really lots of fun, such great cars on a track for smiles, not the quickest, the Gallardo was several seconds a lap quicker, but in the Ferrari you felt like you could die, everytime I go to an event I always tend to take the Ferrari and V8 Vantage, because they are fun. Or if you just want to go very fast a GTR or 911 Turbo is hard to beat and still engaging to an extent.

But yes it also shows how good a Mustang is, yeah they need a little money on suspension but a set of coilovers and some bushing upgrades in the rear really transform them and it cost a couple of grand max and before anyone says, the Pzero is fine on track because you can heat them up.

Jokes aside, the Gallardo gave me some contortion issues, why are the pedals in the middle, but the seat faces forward?! Why's the resting pedal so upright.... But yet still, I'd love to have one :headbonk:

I've driven the Gallardo at Silverstone both wet and dry. In the dry it is quickest, in the wet it is vastly quicker. No matter what it grips like shit to a blanket, but there was just no thrill or fear.

Having driven the 360 also in both conditions, in the dry the 360 you can really throw it around, engage with it and the car handles lovely, in the wet the car communicates grip levels so well to you that I was passing people in the wet who were driving Gallardo's as it has such good communication, of course the Gallardo is quicker but a lot of people can't drive in wet conditions, fear factor, when its not my car I have none and will push to the limits.

The 360 is a proper sports car, you drive by the seat of your pants and it takes no prisoners, it is why it is so good, but on the road as a daily I would not want to own one, the F1 box is very clunky when driven at sedate speeds and the car does not feel that well put together.

In fact I know this sounds daft, but my M3 would absolutely embarrass them on track and drives ten times better on the road.

I had a Gallardo on one of these Supercar days, the MOST frightening thing was when you planted it, it veered left (toward a hedge or similar), and when you hit the brake, it veered right, toward oncoming traffic :lol:

The best car on the day, Gallardo, V8 Vantage, Audi R8 and M3 (V8) was the M3, tremendous fun.

I had to laugh when told that the lack of 'comforts' in the R8 was to save weight, when the M3 had EVERY comfort, was just, if not more, capable.

Never driven an AM or a M3, but assume they could be fun. We're getting a track experience for my younger brother as he's going for job interviews and they keep aksing him for interesting things he's done and saying 'A quick drive in my brothers Mustang' aint cool enough, so need to get him something fun lol... 3 cars + drift track for £63 on groupon! 2+drift for £60 as well, but £3 for an extra is worthit.

I drove a Huracán LP 610-4 for a few laps and found it to be better in every way compared to my stang gt...

this was the decision i had to make when buying the mustang. i was going for the vantage but then ford announced the mustang so I went to the ford garage instead.

Yes a GT3 is more capable for sure, but it is not easy to extract its performance, most people have no idea to drive a 911 or are intimidated or they just end up under steering.

Those who know how to pedal a 911 are very quick indeed, they have huge mechanical grip which most other cars do not have.

An E9x M3 particular with DCT is very accomplished and very very similar in drive to the Mustang, but the M3 has nicer throttle response (6 throttle bodies) and the DCT gear box is a revelation and it makes them very quick cars indeed. A Manual E9x M3 takes around 10.5-11s to do 0-100, whereas the DCT version does the same stint in around 9.5s, it makes it a much quicker car as gear changes are seamless and the car is never out the power zone.

BMW went backwards for me with the new M3/M4, the turbocharged engines are just lacking soul and they make putting power down pretty hard.

The problem with outgoing M3 for me was the interior, it felt dated, the little maids that hand you the seatbelts are flimsy though funny, but they never bring you tea and biscuits afterwards, major let down. But the E9x M3 out the box is better than the Mustang out the box for handling and performance. But stick the Mustang on coilovers or decent suspension and for me its every bit as good, the M's engine still has better response and loves to rev but the Coyote is stronger down low and just as good up top if not better on the 350 manifold. For me the Mustang is more of an occaison, it makes me smile every time I get in it, whereas the E9x did not feel as special, though in certain ways it drove better. But as far as handling goes, I prefer my E46 and its quicker than an E9x in a straight line too, infact it is quicker than a Mustang too as many found out to their surprise on NC500 trip, Mac had to throw body parts at me to make me back off.

But the M3 is really an accomplished car as out the box it drives great on the road and will handle track work with ease, great car and the engine is a peach as long as your willing to rev the nuts off it.

Sounds like there was something wrong with the car to me .... some kind of loose suspension issue by the sound of it. I have something similar in my Pug 1007, but the speeds are just fractionally lower . It seems to go OK and pass MOTs though, so as long as you're ready to trim it out under power/brakes it's fine .

I used to have to do that too on my middle daughters Aygo :lol: That 3 pot could fairly shift with the right driver

So about 5 ;)! And not 5x the car, a beautiful engineered car (not a fan of it's looks for a lambo...), but, not 5x a Mustang.

@15GTBEN I drove a 918 and it was better in every way to the 'Stang ;)! (I haven't driven a 918 before anyone jumps...) ;)!
